Edward Tanner

Edward Tanner ( 1792 - 1831 )

Edward Tanner was the first permanent white settler in Muskingum County, Ohio. He and his wife Sarah Brown Tanner built a cabin on the south side of the Licking river, about seven miles from its mouth, in 1790. (Where the Frolics and War Dance's are Held. Carskadden - Mortin, 1997) (Everhart 1882 p. 329) (Goodspeed 1892 p. 359)

Edward Tanner is buried in Bushy Knob Cemetery on Edward Dr., overlooking Dillon Reservoir (which covers the original Edward Tanner farm). Edward Tanner died in 1831. The grave-site is in the back of a house, with no obvious right-of-way to it. His grave marker is large.... approximately four feet by 2 feet. It is laying on the ground at the far left side of the graveyard and is broken into three pieces. Other readable stones in the cemetery include several children of Edward Tanner's daughter Keziah Tanner.... wife of Sylvester D. Search, other Tanner family members, the Cooke family, Balser Flesher (Tanner's close friend and brother-in-law.. They married sisters).

Edward Tanner was at one time living with Cherokee Indians, having been captured and held for three and a half years. He came to Ohio from Virginia.

Tanner's daughter Keziah and her husband Sylvester D. Search had a daughter named Phoebe, who married Nathan Yocum, son of Peter Yocom who was the son of Nathan Yocum (b. 1783) who came to this area in the early 1800's from Virginia and owned properties in Hopewell and Newton townships in 1828 and 1834.

Nathan Yocum (b. 1783) married Mary Waters in 1812 at Irville, Ohio - which is no longer a town.
