Pioneers of Muskingum County, Ohio

George Doyle and Orpha Webb Doyle

George Doyle was born April 1, 1790, in either Pennsylvania or Delaware. Orpha Webb was born March 11, 1790, in either Pennsylvania or Virginia. They were married about 1810, probably in Pennsylvania since their first three daughters were born in Pennsylvania.

George and Orpha had three children in Pennsylvania: Elizabeth, born 1813; Mary born 1815; and Jane Ann, born 1817. They moved to Muskingum County, Ohio, after Jane Ann was born, with land records indicating that they bought property in Zanesville in 1817. Several of their children were born in Zanesville: George Webb Doyle, born 1822; Eli Doyle, born 1825; James Emery Doyle, born 1829; and Orpha Matilda, born 1832.

They lived in Zanesville from 1817 until they moved to Newcomerstown, Tuscawaras County, Ohio, about 1832. They remained in Tuscawaras County until about 1868 when they moved with their sons, James Emery Doyle and Eli Doyle to Greene County, Indiana, where George died in 1873 with Orpha following in 1877.

Some of their children remained in Ohio, mostly in Newcomerstown. Two of the sons, James Emery and Eli, left Greene County, Indiana in 1880 and headed West to homestead in Nebraska and South Dakota, when many, many of their descendents still reside.
