Hiram Overmyer




Hiram Overmyer - was a soldier of the Rebellion, serving three years in the 68th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry; he participated in seven battles. He had two brothers in the army; Michael, in the hundred days’ service, and Noah, in the 14th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Hiram was born in Sandusky county, October 22, 1831, married in Henry county, Ohio, April 30, 1855, to Malinda E. Carey, who was born in York county, Pennsylvania, February 16, 1834. They are the parents of twelve children: Orlando D., born December 13, 1854; Emma L., December 16, 1856, died January 15, 1857; George W., January 24, 1858; Edward L., March 3, 1860; Hiram A., February 5, 1862; Ulysses S. Grant, March 25, 1865; Mary A., April 23, 1869; Charles F., August 4, 1872; Ida B., and Eda D., November 17, 1875; the former died September 10, 1876; the latter September 21, 1876. Mr. Overmyer’s parents were Michael and Esther (Hammer) Overmyer; his father died January 24, 1859. Hiram was School Director in 1871-1872; a Supervisor in 1880-81. His wife’s parents were Edward and Susan (Shafer) Carey, both of whom are deceased; the former March 28, 1842, the latter August 4, 1876. Business farming and stock raising.
