E. H. Merritt
, son of John and Prudence Merritt, was born January 1, 1822 in Pike County, Ohio. He was reared on the farm and attended the old log-cabin schools till he was twenty-one years old, after which he devoted his time to agricultural pursuits, and by hard labor has accumulated 160 acres of good land. He was married September 29, 1844, to Levise, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Coffman, who were of German descent. They were the parents of thirteen children: Stephen, born December 22, 1846; G. W., November 11, 1847; Mary J., born February 21, 1851, wife of D. C. Bathell; Milton, March 12, 1853; Sarah E., December 24, 1856, wife of Mr. Bakenhester; J. D., January 26, 1859; Theodore R., October 27, 1860; Ida A., August 15, 1866; Emma E., November 3, 1868; infant, February 14, 1850; John, August 24, 1854; Alonzo, April 16, 1866; and Allen B., October 30, 1863. Mr. Merritt has held several township offices, and politically is a Republican. His parents were among the first settlers of Camp Creek Township. His father was born
January 09, 1786, and died in this township in September 1871.
