E.V. Samson
, the fifth son of David and Nancy (Bennett) Samson, was born in Marion Township, Pike County, Ohio, September 26, 1843. When fourteen years of age, he entered the Albany University in Athens County, Ohio and remained four years. October 01,1861, he enlisted in Company F, Fifty-third Ohio Infantry, and was discharged September 03, 1862 at Columbus, Ohio on account of injuries received while loading army stores at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. He returned home, and was married September 17, 1863 to Sarah Jane, daughter of Ransom and Sarah (Richards) Brown of Scioto County. At the time of Morgan's raid through Ohio, he was elected First Lieutenant of an independent company. August 22, 1864, he enlisted in Company G, One-Hundred Seventy-third Ohio Infantry, and was appointed First Duty Sergeant; served in said company until June 26, 1865,when the war being over, he was discharged and returned home. He worked at the carpenter's trade two or three years, and since then has been following the jewelry and gunsmith business. He was appointed Postmaster at Flat, Ohio. July 24, 1877, and still occupies that position. He was appointed Notary Public, November 11, 1882. Mr. and Mrs. Samson have had five children - Charles S. (deceased), William S., Harvey, Edward V. and Nellie A.
