My Name is Joe Baker, born in Ohio. My father is Charles Baker, born in Ohio. I have a copy of his birth certificate that shows his father’s name was Charles Baker, my grandfather, and his mother’s name was Martha Aleshire, my grandmother. I also have a copy of their Marriage license.

PART ONE: My Baker/Becker Connection in Ohio
I have been doing genealogy research for more than 20 years, and the Baker/Becker branch of my tree has been hard to track. That is because I recently found out that we “Baker’s” were once known as “Becker”.
I have been able to trace my Baker line fairly well back to Daniel Baker, once known as Daniel Becker, via the Ohio census records and other family information. It took a trip to the Beaver Union Cemetery in Beaver, Pike County, Ohio, to explain that we Bakers were once Beckers. I have a photo of Daniel’s gravestone and there is English on one side of it and German on the other. I assumed that the entire Becker clan came over to America from “Prussia and/or Bavaria” in the early 1840’s based on the 1850 census showing one child born in Germany and one child born in Ohio.

PART THREE: Other data
from the Ships Passenger listings for New York 1820-1846:
Vessel - Rose
Port of Entry - NY
Nationality - BAV
Date - 6/1841
Daniel Becker - 4 years old, accompanied by: Jacob (36), Mary (29), Elizabeth (10), Peter (8), Cath (2 yr 3 mon)
Daniel Becker - 1 year 6 months, accompanied by Jacob (35), Catherine (32) Jacob (11), Catherine ( 7), Phillip (5), Charlot (4)
(Note: I received a copy of the ship’s passenger list from the National Archives after writing to them. The ship’s list shows they embarked from Le Havre, France and arrived in NYC on June 23, 1841. It is also interesting to note that there were TWO (2) Jacob Bakers, almost the same age, on the boat, with children named Daniel and Catherine)
Interview with Mr. Hammerstein
In 1988, I went to the Beaver Cemetery in Beaver, Pike County, Ohio with my father - Charles Baker and his uncle (my great-uncle) - Leo Baker, to continue researching the family tree. After searching the graveyard, we met a Mr.Lamar Hammerstein who was very knowledgeable about the Beaver area and was familiar with the Baker and Butcher lines.
From my notes, this is what Mr. Hammerstein discussed with us on 5-7-1988:
He said that Adam Metzler was a Prussian soldier captured by George Washington during the Revolutionary war. He was a butcher by trade (Metzler means butcher in German). After the war, he moved to Chillicothe and bought/or was given land. The only record of him was as "Adam the butcher".
George Baker was the son of Daniel and Margaret Baker "drank heavily". He was sheriff a couple of times and married a woman named Comfort, who was also a Butcher (note - I have him married to Comfort Albin - may be a Butcher cousin). His son was Hyram Butcher Baker. He had a million railroad cross ties and built the RR line between Springfield and WCH. Hyram was killed during this building process. Damon was his brother.
Fallensteins built the hotel in 1872 in Beaver and sold it to George Baker.
George's hotel burnt in 1892 and he sold it to the Theobalds afterwards.
Baker was originally Becker. The Beckers came out of Bavaria in 1830's via "Brest in France in 1838". After following the Rhine river. They were 2 years in NY, then went to Pittsburgh and built a raft and came down the Ohio to finally settle in Beaver, Ohio.
PART FOUR: Internet notes/data
Questions & Assumptions:
I had figured that the Beckers had come to America prior to 1841 based on young Peter's age as 9 in the 1850 census and as having him born in Ohio. Also in past talks with my great-granduncle he had thought they had come through the port of New York. So I checked ships passenger listing for NY from 1820 to 1846 and found what I think are the correct Beckers. The ages for Jacob and Mary Eve are correct, but after that things fall apart. Did Peter (age 8 in 1841) die enroute and they re-named their new son after the lost son? Daniel (age 4 in 1841) should be 14-15 in 1850 not 17. Where was Catherine (age 2 in 1841)? Did she die also? Elizabeth would have been 20 in 1850, so I assume she was married and out of the house. Why wasn't John (age 19 in 1850 census) on the boat with them?
Any help with these questions or any links to these families, I would love to hear from you. Rquest mail to Joe Baker, 7835 Woodstone Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45244
