James Family


John James, Sr.  was born in December 1778/1779, the son of John JAMES who was the son of German immigrant, Mathias Jacoby.  The Jameses moved from Bedford County, Virginia to Gallia County, Ohio in 1803.  On 7th August 1806, young John married Ruhama Allison in Gallia County.  She was born in 1788 to Benjamin & Rachel Allison.  by 1817, John and Ruhama had bought a farm near Beaver, Pike county, Ohio.  They lived in that area for the rest of their lives.  She died 25th April 1847, and John married, second, Mrs. Elizabeth Bean on 24th March 1850 in Pike County.   John died 1st August 1855.  He and Ruhama are buried in Beaver Chapel Cemetery in Pike County.  They had nine children:  (1) Mary, ca 1809 - 1874, married Andrew Juvenall, (2) John Jr., 1812 - 1874, married Cynthia Shoemaker, (3) Samuel 1814 - 1862, married Catherine Taylor, (4) David, 1817 - 1878, married Charlotte C. Beauchamp, (5) Mahala, 1820 - 1877, married James Acton, (6) Minerva, 1821 - 1888, married William Harrison Brown, (7) Thomas ca 1826 - 1867, nvever married, (8) Andrew Jackson, and (9) William Dow, 1830 - 1894, married Amanda Livesay.  All but Mary and Mahala remained in Pike County.

Andrew Jackson James, my great grandfather, was born 3 April 1828 near Robbin's Station in Pike County and, like his father, was a farmer.  He married Mary Elizabeth Brill, 30 December 1848 in Pike county.  she was born 11 April 1832 in Ohio to Henry and Catharine (Arnold) Brill.  Andrew died in October 1892, his wife - 2 April 1906.  It is said they were buried in Beaver Chapel Cemetery.  They had nine children (1) Amanda Catharine, 1850-1918, married Charles Frederick Schlicster, (2) Sarah R., 1852 - 1855/1858. (3) Mary Manervia, 1854 - 1929, married John Bennett Kirk(Patrick), (4) Cynthia Alice, 1858 - ?, married Rev. Rev. Marcus Lindsay King Morgan, (5) William Peter, 1861 - 1924, married Nancy C. Wells, (6) Henry Gilbert, 1864 - 1933, married Frances Ellen ROGERS, (7)  Salina Agnes, 1867 - 1928, married James Wade, (8) John Wesley, 1870 - after 1933, married Anna "Nan" Connor, and (9) Nettie Belle(e).  Only Mary Manervia remained in Pike County.

Nettie Bell(e) James was born 29 September 1873 in Dove, Marion Township, Pike County, Ohio.  She married George Washington Downey, 4 January 1902 in Pike County.  He was born 2 December 1880 in Scioto County, Ohio to John and Malinda (Morrison) Downey.  Nettie and George lived in Scioto County until 1909 when they moved to Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio.  George died there of tuberculosis in 1913 at the age of 32. Nettie died in Westerville 31 January 1939.  She and her husband are buried in Otterbein Cemetery there.  The couple had three children:  (1)  Raymond Wesley Downey, 1902 - 1983, married Dorothy Jeannette Hance and had one son, Wesley Ray (1934 -   ), (2) Ada Marie Downey, 1906 - 1988, married Paul K. Orebaugh and had daughter, Jeannie Marie (1927 -    ) and son Ralph Waldo (1930 -    ), and (3) George Beryl Downey, 1909 - 1980, married Mary Frances KUENZLI AND has Daughters Mary Lynne (1940-1941) and Patricia Ann (1942 -     ).
