Biography:
George, son of Henry and Magdelena Nace, was born when his parents were enroute to Berkeley Co., (West) Virginia from Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. When a young man, he went down to Boutetourt Co., Virginia where he lived for a number of years. On 11/12 October 1814, he married to Elizabeth Ann Staley, daughter of Jacob Staley, who was born 1792 in Boutetourt Co. They were married by a Rev. John Helms. In 1818, George and his family moved to Pike Co., Ohio where they settled in Mifflin Twp., along Straight Creek. The value of his real estate in 1850 was set at $800. Ten years later that figure rose to $1,100 along with $720 in personal estate. In the 1860 census, his wife appears named as “Betsy”, and at 68 years of age, was listed as “insane”. She was undoubtedly suffering by then from dementia in old age. They lived at that time beside their son John. In 1870, George was apparently a widower and he was living with his grandson Jeremiah Kesling. At 80 years of age, he was then termed as “infirm”. In his younger days, however, George was a farmer, hunter and woodsman. He loved to amuse neighbors and friends with stories of his hunting trips into the wilderness.
