Tombstone of Anna Christina Salzmann

Biography:

Almost nothing is known about John outside of his name and birthplace.  His name appears on the tombstone of his wife, but without any further information. It is quite possible that he died there in Germany.  His wife was the former Anna Christina Bott.  She was born on 5 November 1808 in Hesse, Germany and came to America, dying on 21 February 1865 in Ohio.  Her tombstone is erected in the Evergreen Union Cemetery, Waverly, Pike Co., Ohio, although she was buried in another location in town, an old cemetery that was moved from its original location.  No where does she appear in the 1860 census and it is possible that she is the 52-year-old “Christine Salzman” who arrived in New York on 19 July 1862 with a fifteen year old George Salzman, on a ship named “Gascher” from Breman, Germany.  Their point of origin was listed as “Kerstenhanson”, but just where this refers to is not known.  Their point of destination was listed on the ship manifest as “Washington”, perhaps an intermediate destination before going to Ohio.

Children:

1) Dorothy, or Dorathea, was born c. 1835 in Germany, being 19 years old when she came to America with her sister Anna Martha.  She sailed from Bremen, Germany on a ship named "Meta" and arrived at New York on 1 May 1854.  In occupation, she was listed then as a "servant".  She married to William C. Smith on 26 August 1856 in Highland Co., Ohio.  It is interesting that a “William Schmidt”, age 19, was listed on the ship manifest right beside Dorothy, leading one to wonder if this was her future husband.  Dorothy listed her intended destination on the ships record as New York, indicating that she and her sister may not have known they would end up in Ohio, intending at that point only to make it to America.  William and Dorothy later lived in Illinois.  She might be the “Dorathea Smith” in the 1880 census, who is a widow living in Jo Daviess Co., Illinois with five children at home, although that Dorathea is listed as 52 years of age.

2) Anna Martha, our ancestor. See entry on Jacob Sautter.

3) John Heinrich, was born c. 1838.  This birth date is based on the immigration record which appears to list his age as “19” in August 1857. The writing is not entirely clear and one interpretation reads it as “14” instead. But nineteen seems more likely.  He was apparently known as John.  He accompanied his sister Elizabeth on a ship named the “Caroline” that set sail from Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York on 11 August 1857. They had declared Ohio on the ship manifest as their intended destination.

4) Sophie Elizabeth, born in February 1840 in Hesse, Germany.  She arrived in New York on the ship “Caroline” with her brother John on 11 August 1857, having sailed from Bremen, Germany.  Known as Elizabeth, she married to Frederic Burkhardt on 4 August 1859 in Ross Co., Ohio.  Their son George was their only child.  Frederic was a farmer, born in Baden, Germany in March 1835, coming to America in 1854. In 1860, they appear in Hamilton Co., Ohio, Frederic working there as a butcher.  They later moved to Johnson Co., Missouri, appearing there in both the 1870 (Warrensburg) and 1880 (Centerview) census records. A 14-year-old girl, born in what some have interpreted to be “Louisana”, is listed with the family in 1880 as a "daughter", but named Mary E. Bayles, indicating that she may have been an "adopted" daughter of sorts.  She does not appear with the family in 1870.  Also with the family in 1880 was Mary Elizabeth Sautter (daughter of Elizabeth's sister Anna Martha), and Edward Berry, who would marry Mary Elizabeth later that same year! In 1910, and then still in 1920, Frederic and Elizabeth were both still alive and living in Warrensburg, Johnson Co., Missouri.
     a. George Frederick, born 18 January 1861 in Ohio. His wife was named Katherine, known as Kate, and they had at least two children.  Kate was born in Pennsylvania in 1867. They married c. 1892. They appear in Johnson Co., Missouri in 1900, 1910 and 1920, living in Warrensburg. George was a farmer. He died on 19 July 1928 in Warrensburg.  He was buried in the Sunset Hill Cemetery of Warrensburg.  His wife survived him.

5) George.  He may be the George who arrived in America on 19 July 1862, at 15 years of age, placing his birth c. 1847.  He was at that time, even at that age, named as a “farmer”. This George Salzman arrived in New York on the ship “Gascher” from Breman, Germany.
