Biography:
Richard Harvey was the son of Benjamin and Mary (Fisher) Brown. His mother died only 28 days after he was born, probably due to complications following the birth. Richard was born Monroe Co., Ohio. He lived for a time in West Virginia when he was nearly twenty years old, working there with his father, and like his father, he also became a farmer. His father wrote in 1874 that Richard "likes Virginia better than he thought he would". Later in life, however, "Harve", as he was known, moved to Pike Co., Ohio and there married to Margaret Ann Sautter, a full blooded German and daughter of Jacob and Anna Martha (Salzmann) Sautter. She was born on 18 August 1860 in Waverly, Ohio. They were married on 25 November 1886 in a home near Waverly, Ohio under authority of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Later, after the move to Madison Co., they joined the Churches of Christ in Christian Union (founded in 1909).

Richard was taught to read and write by his wife! For a time, they lived in Fayette Co., Ohio. In 1900, Richard and his family lived in Pebble Twp., Pike Co., where he was renting his home at the time. In 1910, they lived over in Pee Pee Twp., Pike Co., Ohio. Later, perhaps about 1912, the family moved north to Madison Co., Ohio. A newspaper article in 1986 states that the family moved there in 1900, which would obviously be after the census of that year if accurate. It was there in Madison Co. where Richard died of a heart attack. He was stricken while working in a nearby field, shucking some corn. His little black dog "Jack" began barking and alerted someone to his masters need. Richard was found alive and taken to his home, but he died there a few hours later at 1:30 p.m. on 3 January 1930. The cause of death on his death certificate is given as uremia, or kidney failure - with organic heart disease as the contributory cause. His funeral service was held at the London, Ohio Church of Christ in Christian Union, conducted by Rev. G. C. Johnson and Rev. Frank Sollars. His death made front page news in the Madison Press newspaper. Margaret, his wife, lived until 15 August 1945. She was buried two days later in the Paint Twp. Cemetery beside her husband.
