John S. Samson
, M.D., was born in Marion Township, Pike County, Ohio, January 28, 1841, the fourth son of David and Nancy (Bennett) Samson. He attended the common schools until eighteen years of age, and then attended the Albany University at Albany, Athens County, four years. November 01, 1861 he enlisted in Company F, Fifty-Third Ohio Infantry, and participated in the battles of Pittsburg Landing and Corinth. He received a furlough on account of sickness and was discharged January 15, 1863. After his recovery, he again enlisted in the Second Ohio Heavy Artillery, and served till the close of the war. Immediately after his return home, he commenced the study of medicine, in September 1865, under Dr. H. C. Beard. Remaining with him three years, he attended lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Cincinnati, Ohio, in the winter of 1868 -1869. He has been very successful in his practice, and since 1881 has combined the drug business with his practice, and has a large and growing trade. He was married May 31, 1869 to Catharine Koger, daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Geib) Koger. They have two children - Anna and Charles, aged thirteen and nine years respectively. Dr. Samson is a member of Lucasville Lodge, No. 465, F. & A.M., and the Grand Army of the Republic, California Post, No 375. Mrs. Samson is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church.
