FRANCIS, Bernice Kelley  

 Bernice Kelley Francis, 90, of Buchanan, Va. died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 20, 1908, in Pike County, Ohio, the daughter of Howard Preston and Ora Belle Newland Kelley. She was the wife of the late Franklin B. Francis and had resided in Chillicothe and Natural Bridge, Va., returning to Roanoke in 1985.

Mrs. Francis had been a teacher at Natural Bridge and Glasgow, Va. schools, teacher and librarian at James River High School and a school and public librarian in Waverly, Ohio. She was a member of the DAR and Eastern Star, and had been active in the Ohio and National Genealogical Societies and was involved in the research and preparation of her family genealogy.

Surviving are one son, Dick Francis, Buchanan, Va.; one daughter, Pat Francis Chirogene, of St. Augustine, Fla.; four grandchildren, Marty Francis, Buchanan, Va. Melissa Chirogene Mainieri, Collegeville, Pa.; Christopher Chirogene, Hamburg, Germany, and Philip Chirogene, Orlando, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Leah Chirogene, Hamburg, Germany.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 199, in Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. David Brown officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Botetourt Funeral Home, Buchanan, Va. and from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Fawcett Funeral Home. (Note: Charter Member of Pike Co. Chapter O.G.S.)
