Those who wish to have a memento of Waverly High School can now purchase a wooden painted replica of the high school through the WHS band.
The replicas were created for the band by shepherd's Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization which was started in 1989 with a goal to serve people with disability who have traditionally been excluded from the workplace.
"My wife, Susan and i were attending an Ohio Music Education Conference last year and we saw the display.  She said we should do that for the high school.  I contacted the company and served them several pictures.  this is the design thaey came up with," said Waverly High School Band Director John Huffman of the minature wooden high schools.  "This will be a real keepsake."
The money will be used to help support the band and provide replacement band uniforms.  The Tigers will still be sticking with the same style of uniforms they currently use.
The back side of the replica lists the high schools address and a brief history of the school at 400 E. Second Street, which says "Construction of the fourth Waverly High School building was completed at the end of 1934, with students first attending here in January 1932.  The graduation ceremonies of 1932 were held in May with 34 students receiving diplomas.  this, however, was not the first class to graduate from the building.  the 46 member class of 1931 had that honor even though they attended class in the 1924 building on Walnut Street, which is now the Senior Citizen Center."
I sent them pictures of all different angles of the school, and they really stuck to the detail of the architecture," said Huffman.  "It was better than I expected.  We've had a really good response.  We ran out quick, but we just got another big order in.  I guess they had them on display somewhere and they've really gotten a lot of compliments on the design."
Huffman added, "They make great Christmas presents for alumnus who have moved away.  We're had parents buy them for their kids for graduation presents, and kids have bought them for parents who graduated from Waverly High."
Originally, the band had 100 small and 100 large replicas to sell and Huffman said they sold out in three weeks.  They have now ordered a total of 350 each and they will get more when they run out.
"We weren't real sure how these would do at first, so we wanted to play it safe, "  said Huffman.
The replicas come in two sizes with a larger one going for the price of $18. and the samaller $13.  The dimensions for the largest one is a length of roughly 12 inches, heigh of 2.5 inches, and a thickness of 3/4 of an inch.  the smaller one has a length of seven inches, a thickness of 1.5 inches, and 1/4 inch.
The big high school is $18. while the smaller ornament size is $13.  The small one has a ribbon on it which would allow it to be hung on a Christmas tree or elsewhere, while the big one can occupy a shelf or a ledge quite comfortably.
To purchase replicas, contact any WHS band member or call 947-0172.  The band will also be selling the replicas this weekend at the Jingle Bell Art and Craft Show.
