PIKE COUNTY'S FLAG
NEW FLAG DESIGNED FOR BICENTENNIAL
This year, Pike County will join in the Ohio Bicentennial Celebration with the presentation of the first county flag.
Earlier this year, the Pike County committee for the Bicentennial Celebration organized a contest for the design of a flag to represent this county. Bruce Overly of the Beaver Valley Historical Society created and submitted the winning design, which was approved by the Pike County Commissioners.
The design was presented at the Commissioner's Meeting, Monday. Just as the Ohio Bicentennial is an opportune time to reflect on the state's achievements, history, and culture, the new Pike County flag depicts the development and accomplishments of the county.
Distinguishing attributes of the flag's design include it's unique shape and symbols. The shape of the flag was chosen so that when displayed, it will stand out among other county flags. The colors kelly green, navy blue, goldenrod, black, and white represent the geography of the county. Each township in the county, is represented by a five-pointed star. The county's educational systems, industrial importance, wood production, farming operations, heritage, and family values are all indicated by symbols that surround an atom, the depiction of the key industry that has been central in the county for over 50 years.
Linda Bayse, Pike County Bicentennial Coordinator, will present the new Pike County flag to the Statehouse on Tuesday. The flag will fly over the Statehouse for the entirety of 2003. Pike County will also be designated one day during the year to give their choice of presentation on the lawn of the Statehouse.
