Mrs WILSON VALENTINE

Mrs. Wilson E. Valentine died at her home in Washington township, Thursday afternoon, February 8th, after an illness of three weeks. She is survived by her husband and four children, namely: Clarence, Catherine, Loring, and Florence; also three brothers, William Compton of Circleville; Elmer Compton of Kingston, and Lewis Compton of Columbus. Funeral serviced were held Saturday afternoon at the United Brethren church, Rev. Wallin Riebel officiating and burial in Forest cemetery.

Word has been received here that B.C. Van Heyde, of Springfield, uncle of Meinhard and George Crites, passed away Tuesday. He was a native of this city June 2, 1931.

DAVID VAN VICKLE

David Van Vickle, 76, of near Orient, [Pickaway County, OH] died Wednesday in Berger Hospital. He was a member of Scioto Twp. Grange. Born on Sept. 19, 1883 in Indianpolis, Ind., son of Joseph & Laura Neff Van Vickle. Survived by sister, Mrs. Laura Lininger, Washington Court House. Services in Norris Funeral Home of Grove City with Robert St. Clair, Minister of Commercial Point, burial at Forrest Cemetery.

J. P. VAN VICKLE

Died at Home in Ashville Ð Burial in Forest Cemetery Friday. -- J. P. Van Vickle died at his home in Ashville Wednesday, October 30, aged 71 years. Deceased was a farmer by occupation, but had retired. He was a brother-in-law of John S. Neff of this city. Mr. Van Vickle married Miss Laura Neff, who has been dead about fifteen years. A son and two daughters survive. They are Mrs. Mary Whitlock, of Mt. Sterling; Laura Lininger, of near Washington C. H. , and Daniel E. Van Vickle of Commercial Point. A few years ago Mr. Van Vickle married a second wife, who survives. Mr. Van Vickle had been ill for the paste six weeks with hardening of the arteries. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, of this city and of the Odd Follows. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Ashville Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Internment in Forest Cemetery.

FREDERICK VIETH

Frederick William Adolph Vieth was born in Obernakirchen Prussia, Germany, September 29, 1845. He was the son of John H. F. and Sophia Sander Vieth. He came to this country in 1864 and to this city a year later. He married Miss Mary Strong Kellstadt, August 19, 1866, and she died June 3, 1919. Six children were born of that union, three of whom survive. They are: Wealtha Ella, wife of Judge L. N. Abernethy of this city; Mary Emma, wife of L. F. BeVier of Columbus; and Minnie Lillian, wife of Rev. Joseph Sittler of Lancaster. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. Of all his immediate family, one brother and one sister survive. They are Mrs. Emma Korff, of Karlshuff, Germany, and Ludwig Vieth of Berlin, Germany. Mr. Vieth was a Mason of rank. Interment in Forest Cemetery Monday last, Rev. Joseph Sittler officiating.

Mrs. JOHN VINCENT

After an illness extending over two years, Mrs. John H. Vincent, wife of Bishop Vincent, of the Methodist Episcopal church and chancellor of the Chauttauquan institution, died March 31 [1909], at her home in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born at Deposit, New York in 1832. Prof. George E. Vincent of the faculty of the University of Chicago is a son.

JACOB VOLTZ

The body of Jacob Voltz, a young man employed on the farm of Jacob Wolf near Lockbourne, was discovered in the canal at Lockbourne on last Monday morning. It seems as if Voltz was trying to walk across the locks on Sunday night and fell therefrom and was drwoned. Justice Earbart investigated the case and returned a verdict of accidental drowning. He was about 27 years of age and unmarried.

SUSAN WAGNER

Mrs. Susan Wagner, wife of John Wagner, died at her late home in this city last Wednesday monring at 8 o'clock aged about 56 years. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from the residence, Rev. C.A. Naylor of Kingston, officiating.

ROY WALISA

Roy "Junior" Walisa, 20, passed away Sunday, Jan 10, in his home at 335 E. Ohio St., Circleville. [Surviving are his parents,] Roy and Ellen Amos Walisa; a brother, Raymond, at home; a half-brother, William Clay, serving in the Air Force in New York; six sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Keaton and Mrs. Ruth Thompson, both of Circleville; and Marle Patricia, Juanita, and Nancy, all at home. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Defenbaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Melvin Maxwell officiating. Burial was made in Forest Cemetery.

JAMES WALLACE

Ex-Sheriff James T. Wallace, former Sheriff of Pickaway County, died at his home at Kinderhook, in Deercreek township, Tuesday morning at 1 o'clock. His death was caused by dropsical ailment having been impaired in health for several years, assuming a serious form six weeks ago. The deceased was a native of Nelson County, Virginia, born June 8, 1831, the son of Andres and Elizabeth Wallace, the family moving to Ohio in 1854. He chose blacksmithing as his avocation, having a shop at Kinderhook for forty years, and was favorably known in the country roundabout. In 1888, Mr. Wallace was the Democratic candidate for Sheriff of Pickaway County, was elected by a plurality of 922, and re-elected in 1890, by an increased plurality of 1,106. He discharged his duties of the office creditably and to the public satisfaction. At the close of the four years, he returned to Kinderhook, and resumed his trade. Mr. Wallace was twice married, first, in 1851 to Virginia Ware Pugh, of Virginia, who died in 1876. Seven children were born of the marriage, six now living: John A. of Toledo; William C, Charles T. and Newton Wallace, of Columbus; Frank Wallace and Mrs. Elizabeth Carter, wife of Thomas R. Carter, of Kinderhook. The second wife was Julia A. Fox, the marriage taking place in 1878. She died within a year after the marriage, and in 1879, Mr. Wallace married Miss Martha V. Counts, who survives. The deceased also leaves one brother, Jackson Wallace, of West Virginia and two sisters in Virginia. Mr. Wallace was a man of sturdy character, strictly honest and honorable in all his dealings with his fellow men. He was universally esteemed. Funeral from Mt. Pleasant Church, Wednesday at 2 o'clock. Burial in the adjoining cemetery. [NB: the article says married twice, though clearly he was married 3 times]

PATRICK WARDICK

Patrick Wardick died at his home on Union street Monday morning of a complication of diseases, aged 87 years. Mr. Wardick came to this country from Ireland in 1851, and has resided in this county almost every since. For a number of years previous to his removal to this city, he lived with his family at Williamsport. He leaves a wife, and three daughter. The funeral occurred from St. Joseph's church, Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. M. M. Meara, officiating. Interment at St. Joseph's cemetery.

PATRICK WARDICK

Patrick Wardick, whose health has been feeble for some years, died at his home in this city, last Tuesday night, aged 86 years. He was a native of Ireland and a resident of Deercreek Township for a number of years.

ALONZO WEAVER

Alonzo Eugene Weaver, a prominent farmer and fruit grower of Walnut township, died at Grant Hospital, Columbus, Tuesday morning at four o'clock, following an operation performed Wednesday of last week. Mr. Weaver was the son of David F. and Amanda Cole Weaver and was born in Amanda township, Fairfield County, January 19, 1852. On September 10, 1874, he married Mary C. Oman, who died Nov. 1, 1901. He is survived by three daughters; Mrs. George Marion, and Mrs. Walter J. Marion, of Circleville Township, and Mrs. Oren Ater of Atlanta. He also leaves three grandchildren; Alonzo, son of Mrs. and Mrs. George Marion, a student at Ohio State University; Gerald, a student at Oxford University, and Katherine, children of Mrs. and Mrs. Walter J. Marion, at home. Of his immediate family he leaves one sister, Mrs. Lida Brinker, of Walnut Township. August 9, 1913, Mr. Weaver married Miss Julia Patterson, who survives. Mr. Weaver, had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for sixty years and for a score of years was superintent of the Hedges Chapel Sunday School. He served many years as a member of the board of education in his township and was a member of Columbia lodge of Odd fellows, of this city, and of the grange. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at one o'clock from the home, conducted by Rev. Mr. Sudlow, of Ashville and Rev. Mr. Chandler of Columbus, and the body will be laid to rest in the mausoleum near Reber Hill Cemetery.

CLARA WELLINGTON

Clara, wife of Harry Wellington, of Ashville, died at St. Francis hospital, Columbus, Wednesday morning March 8 [1922], at 10:30 a.m. Her health was due to septicemia. The deceased was born in Ross County, near Chillicothe, in 1897. She was the daughter of William and Margaret Hartley Edgington. She is survived by her husband and six children, three boys and three girls. Of her immediate family, four brothers and two sisters survived. They are J. Stanley Edgington, James Edgington, of this city; Jesse Edgington of St. Louis, Missouri; Gilbert Edgington of Toledo; Mrs. Rhoda Moyer of Lima, and Mrs. J. Lewis Carter, of this city [Circleville].

LEON WELLS

The Death of Leon H. Wells - Leon H. Wells, for years a resident of Circleville, died at Washington DC Wednesday morning. The deceased was a son of Mrs. E. E. Winship, was about 36 years of age, and was educated in the public schools of this city. Mrs. Winship went to Washington Tuesday evening. The remains will be brought to Circleville for interment, arriving this evening. Funeral services Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Mr. Wells was married to Miss Ida Cantner of this city. She and a little daughter of four years survive him. He was a genial, companionable man and his early demise will be lamented by a large circle of friends.

Mrs. ANDREW WILKINS

Mother of Grover Wilkins, aged 72, wife of Andrew Wilkins, died at the home of her son, Grover, Fairview Avenue of heart trouble, Tuesday at 6 p.m. Death was sudden. Mrs. Wilkins was a native of Ross Co, being born Aug 16, 1858, the daughter of Michael and Mary Cherry Hittinger. She is survived by her husband, her son, at whose home she died; three brothers, William, Lewis, and Nelson Hittinger, all of Adelphi; four sisters, Mrs. Susan Gilpin, this city; Mrs. Vistie Francis and Mrs. Mervie Bennette of Adelphi, and Miss Clara Hittinger, of Hallsville. Funeral services will be Thursday, at 2:30 pm at the church of Christ in Christian Union with Rev. C. W. Ruhlman, of the Evangelical church officiating in the absence of Rev. O. L. Ferguson. Burial will be in Hilter-Ludwig cemetery by M. S. Rinehart.

JAMES WILKINS

James Wilkins died Sunday evening from effects of paresis [sic]. His home was near Whisler and he is survived by a son, Clarence, of Columbus. Funeral Tuesday, and burial in Whisler Cemetery.

SARAH WILL

Mrs. Sarah A. Will, widow of the late R.G. Will, died in this city on Thursday, after a long illness, aged 58 years. The funeral took place from her late residence at half past three yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dr. J. P. Stratton, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Will was born in this county. Her maiden name was Nigh. She leaves seven children, three sons, and four daughters, viz: Ed G. Will of Cincinnati, Charles and Burns Will, Mrs. Robert Wilson, Mrs. John W. Lowe, and Misses Mollie and Grace Will, all of this city.

JAMES WISECUP

James R. Wisecup, 73, Lyndon Rt. 1, died 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Greenfield Municipal Hospital. Born Aug. 6, 1903, in Ross County, he was the son of Joseph and Ruth Herdman Wisecup. Mr. Wisecup was a retired farmer and member of the First United Methodist Church. His wife, Mrs. Hazel I. Wisecup, died March 9, 1970. Surviving are three sons, John R. Wisecup, Haywood, Calif.; James F. Wisecup, Pomeroy, and Jerry T. Wisecup, Circleville Rt. 1; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Mildred) Glenn and Mrs. Eileen Head, both of Greenfield, and Mrs. Donna Hill, Chillicothe; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and two brothers, E.L. Wisecup, Lyndon Rt. 1, and Raymond Wisecup, Washington C.H. A daughter, four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral service for Mr. Wisecup will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Murray's Funeral Home, Greenfield. Rev. Clair Emerick and Rev. Noble Miller will officiate and burial will be in South Salem Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A. R. WOLFE

PROMINENT CHILLICOTHE CITIZEN DIES THUESDAY, BURIAL FRIDAY AFTERNOON - A.R. Wolfe, a prominent Chillicothe citizen, died at his home on East Seventh street in that city Tuesday afternoon, April 17, aged 53 years. The deceased for a number of years was a reporter on the News Advistiser and later became city editor. In addition to his newspaper work he became lessee and manager of the Masonic opera house, now known as the Majestic. He was appointed postmaster by President Wilson in November 1913, and served two terms and made a most excellent postmaster. Mr. Wolfe was the first president of the Rotary Club and served two terms. Socially he was a member of the Masons and its different bodies, the Shrine, Knight-Templar and Scottish Rite. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Alice Thomas, a sister of the late Judge J. M. Thomas. A few years after her death he married Miss Anna B. Coppel, daughter of Charles F. Coppel, who survives. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at St Paul's Episcopal church and his remains was placed in Grandview mausoleum. A number of poeple from this city friends of the deceased attended the funeral. Mr. Wolfe was scheduled to address the Circleville Rotary club at its luncheon last Thursday at The Boggs.

CHARLES WRIGHT

C.D.Wright Passes Away Wednesday, Had Been In Failing Health The Past Five Years, Funeral Friday -- Charles D. Wright, aged 80 years, a large land owner in Perry township, died Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at his home in Circleville. Mr. Wright had been in failing health for the past five years, his last serious illness being of five weeks duration. He was a director of the Farmers National Bank of Williamsport. A son, Walter, is employed at the Clarksburg Motor Sales. He was born at Richmondale, May 3, 1857, and was the son of George and Elizabeth Myers Wright. He married Keziah Wakefield 50 years ago. Surviving him are his widow and three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ebenhack of Williamsport, Mrs. Maude Tarbill of New Holland and Mrs. Vida O'Brien of Columbus; six sons, Walter of Williamsport, Cecil of Erie, Pa, Marvin of Teaneck, N. J., Noel E. of Columbus, Ercell and Home of New Holland; also two brothers, John Wright of New Holland and William Wright of Florida; one sister, Mrs. Ida Griffith of New Holland. Private funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the residence with Rev. H. A. Sayre of the M. E. Church in Circleville officiating. Burial will be made in New Holland cemetery by C. E. Hill.

ELIZA WRIGHT

Daughter of Stephen and Mary (Hoffhines) Cromley, was born in Walnut township, Pickway County, Ohio on the 18th day of January 1834, and departed this life at her home in Ashville, Ohio on the 4th day of October 1916, having reached the grand old age of 82 years, 8 months, and 16 days.

In the days of her infancy she was made a member of the Lord's kingdom by the holy sacrament of Baptism. At the proper age, after a course of instruction in the fundamentals of the Christian Religion as set forth in Dr. Martin Luther's Catechism, she was confirmed in the St. Paul's Lutheran church, on the 17th day of April 1852, by Ref. J. A. Roof. Later in life she transferred her membership to the English Lutheran church of Ashville, Ohio, with which she remained a faithful member until removed by death.

The deceased was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Jacob Baam, in the autumn of 1858. This union was blessed with three children namely, Lena Leota, who died in infancy; Mattie Jane, wife of Rev. D. E. Snapp, who died August 1, 1890; Thaddeus W. Baum, who died September 18, 1910. With her husband she was permitted to live until the 16th day of April 1876; when he was taken from her by the angel of death.

After a period of nine years the deceased was again united in marriage to William Wright of Madison township on the 4th day of December, 1885, by Rev. D. E. Snapp.

Again death entered her home and took from her side her husband on the 22nd day of July 1906. Since this time until her death she remained a widow. Not only was the deceased called upon to give up her partners in life, but also to part with the dear children of her first marriage.

Those of her immediate relatives who survive are: four grand-children, namely, Mrs. Prof. Busch Bexley, Columbus, O; Mrs. Bert L. Oman Duvall, Ohio Route 1, and the Misses Helen and Dorothy Baum, Duvall, O together with six great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. M. L. Roof, Ashville, O; Mrs. Ann M. Wheeler, Lima O, one brother, Mr. Henry Cromley, Ashville, O; two step-children; Mrs. J. B. Hinds, Ashville, O, and Mr. James Wright of Springfield, Ohio.. Besides these relatives, she leaves a very large circle of friends who will greatly miss her, for she was loved by many.

Funeral services were held in her church at Ashville. on Friday afternoon October 6, 1916, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. B. Ringle, and interment was made in the beautiful Forest cemetery at Circleville, Ohi0 where she now awaits the coming of her Redeemer to take those who are His into their internal home, after the great resurrection.

JOHN WRIGHT

John Wright, aged 63, prominent, Ross Co farmer, died at his home near Greenland, at 4 a.m. Sunday following a stroke of paralysis. He was born Jan. 1 1867, and was never married. He is survived by one brother, Douglas of Chillicothe and sister, Mrs. Frank White, Frankfort. Funeral services were held at Brown's chapel, Ross Co., Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Miller, of Clarksburg, officiating. Burial was in the chapel cemetery by Metzger and Fisher.

SOCRATES YATES

Socrates M. Yates, a verteran of the Civil War having served in Company K. 122d regiment, O.V.I., died, last Thursday morning of paralysis after one week's illness in his 79th year. Deceased was a native of Pickaway Co, son of John and Elizabeth (Blue) Yates, and was born in Deercreek township on Dec 16 1842. On January 28 1869, he was united in marriage to Martha Baker, also of Deercreek township; to this union two daughters were born, Miss Emily D. Yates, and Arizona Yates, who married C. P. Heiskell; his wife and daughter Arizona preceded him in death within the year; Miss Emily and two grandsons, Lawrence and John Heiskell survive. Of his immediate family he is survived by two brothers, John Yates of Butler, Missouri and Rolland Yates of Dayton, Ohio. Religiously deceased was a member of the Methodist Church, fraternally of the Independenat Order of Odd Fellows, the Knights of Pythias and of Groce Post Grand Army of the Republic, funeral last Saturday afternoon by Mader and Ebert.

JERRY YOUNG

Jerry Alyn Young, 30, of Circleville, Ohio, passed away January 17, 2000, at his residence. He was born October 3, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, to Jerry Alan (Linda) (Edwards) Young, who reside in Circleville. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ervin Sam and Norma Jane Young; and maternal grandfather, Herbert W. Edwards. Surviving, along with his parents, are his wife, Amy (Reed) Young; two daughters, Courtney Marie Young and Haley Dawn Young; stepdaughter, Kaitlyn Lemaster; one brother, Shane Adam Young and his wife, Angela Young, Circleville; maternal grandmother, Patsy Ruth Edwards, Kingston, Ohio; aunts and uncles, David (Diana) Rozelle, Frankfort, Ohio, Steve (Mary) Farabee, Chillicothe, Jeff (Karen) Castle, Kingston, Don (Kathy) Newsome, Kingston, Keith (Sara) Woods, Kingston, Patricia Edwards, Circleville, Herbert W. (Kim) Edwards, Waverly, and Kenny (Pat) Young, Circleville; and special in-laws, Wayne (Diana) Reed, Circleville. He was employed by Precision Electrical Service and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the V.FW. #3331. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 20, 2000, in the Defenbaugh-Wise Funeral Home, Circleville, at 10:30 a.m. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at the funeral home. Rev. Don Bachman will officiate. Burial will be at the family's wishes at a later date. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Hospice of Pickaway County, 600 N. Pickaway St., Circleville, Ohio, 43113.

MARY YOUNG

Funeral services were held Sunday in the Leonard Funeral Home, Logan, for Mary Catherine Young, 81, who passed away Thursday, Jan 6, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rolland Carpenter, New Straistville, Rt. 1. Burial was made in Amanda Township Cemetery. She lived most of her life near Amanda, leaving that community several years ago to reside in Hocking County.
