in St. Mary's Parish, Avilla, Indiana. Came to America on the ship "Union", from
Bremen and Southampton to New York, arrival date November 21, 1868. Travelling
with him was Ferd. Huelsenbeck, Heinrich Rathe, and Caspar Pieper. He went
directly to Avilla, Indiana, where he had friends from his German town. After a
time, Ludwig moved his family to Union County, Illinois. He purchased a farm on
"Nubbin Ridge" near Cobden. He engaged in serious truck farming, sending produce
to Chicago. Naturalized February 5, 1869, Noble County, Indiana. Buried St.
Joseph's Cemetery, Cobden.

land, May 27, 1845, to become St. Stephen's Cemetery. Occupation: Farmer. Buried
St. Stephen's Cemetery, Seneca County. His last will and testament left 77 acres
of farm and house to his wife, with son Henry named executor after her death.
The acreage included livestock, horses, sheep, hay wagon, ploughs, farming
utensils, grain, and household furniture. His daughter Elizabeth was to receive
fifty dollars more than her siblings.

Thomas and his wife were among the organizers of the Campbellite Disciple Church
of Clinton Township. Both are buried in the cemetery at Bethel Church south of
McArthur.

marched into Laussanne. The Napolean Era had begun. In 1800, Josef was able to
buy another farm. A few years before his death in 1811, Josef wrote a will which
became part of the sale document when the property was sold in 1814: "According
to will and Schliss...in favor of the beloved and still living mother, Maria
Gertrud Amrein...will have for as long as she lives, free living, a quiet room,
use of the owners living room as well as kitchen and every place necessary for
her living needs. She should also have the needed firewood, prepared by the
owner, sufficient grain, potatoes, vegetables and fruit, as much as she might
need, fresh or dried, from the month of May till harvest. During winter months,
always enough milk...."

Lancashire, England. Thomas Salts was listed in the 1782 and 1784 Virginia State
Census, listing three in the household. On July 21, 1789, he received a land
grant of 202 acres in Hampshire County, Virginia. On June 24, 1814, he purchased
land in Ross County, Ohio. This land is now in Vinton County. Due to many
boundary changes, the land purchased by Thomas Salts was in three different
counties (Ross, Jackson, and Vinton) from 1814 to 1850. Thomas and his sons came
to McArthur, Ohio, and they worked as coal miners and lumbermen. Thomas and Mary
are buried near Bethel Church, Vinton County, Ohio. This is the site of the "Old
McArthur Cemetery". There is a marker for Mary, but none for Thomas.
