MCSCHOOLER,JUSTUS GREY7 (JAMES WESLEY8): Justus Gray
McSchooler was born in New York 30 January, 1824, probably Madison County, NY.
Justus McSchooler was married to Elizabeth Brown Wiggins7 on 31 August, 1848 in
Pickaway County, Ohio. They were located in Pickaway County in the 1850 and 1860
Ohio census. He was listed as a storekeeper. They moved to Clay County, Illinois
in April, 1863. Justus died 12 December, 1866 in Clay County, Illinois of
illness contracted during the Civil War. He is buried the Maysville Cemetery,
Clay City, Clay County, Illinois.
While in Pickaway County, Ohio Justus was an Ohio State Legislator in 1860. He
also was a schoolteacher there. In December, 1861 he was mustered in as Captain
of Company E, Seventy-Third Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His Civil War
service was brief and resulted in his eventual death. He resigned his commission
5 September, 1862 to convalesce from Typhoid Fever contracted almost immediately
after he volunteered. His health, like so many Civil War volunteers, was ruined
by the war; many more died of disease than enemy action.
After his move to Clay County, Illinois Justus continued to serve his community.
He opened a store, was an Illinois County Commissioner and on the School Board.
His probate showed a large supply of items on hand in his store, which were sold
at auction.
WIGGINS, JOHN WESLEY8 (THOMAS9): John Wesley Wiggins was born 24 December
1810 in Ross County, Ohio to Thomas Wiggins9 and Lucinda Holdman9. He married
Amy Terwilliger8 on 31 March 1831 in Pickaway County, Ohio. He died 26 April
1889 in Pickaway County, Ohio. His Obituary, published in Pickaway County, Ohio
follows:
John Wesley Wiggins died at his residence in Deercreek Township, last Sunday at
3 A. M. of kidney ailment, which was in its incipient stage seven years ago.
About four years ago he had a stroke of paralysis, and since then has been in
feeble condition. The deceased was in his 79th year. He was born in Ross County,
O., December 24, 1810, son of Thomas Wiggins, who settled in Wayne township,
this county in 1812, where he died in 1825. John Wesley Wiggins was married to
Miss Amy Terwilliger, of Deercreek Township , March 31, 1831 and was the father
of nine children , one son, Jacob F., and eight daughters, two of whom died in
infancy. The deceased lived at the homestead in Wayne Township until a few years
ago, when he moved over the line into Deercreek. He was a man of sterling
integrity, blameless in his life, faithful to every duty, ever firm in standing
up for the right, and was honored and respected in the community. He was
converted when a boy under the preaching of Rev. Wilson, at a camp meeting near
Brown’s Chapel, Ross county, and has since lived a Methodist, always belonging
to the Mt. Pleasant society, acting with ability in many of the offices of the
church. He never was an aspirant for any public position. Politically, he was an
ardent, unswerving Democrat all his life, and often sat in the conventions and
councils of the party.
The multitude at the funeral, Monday afternoon, indicated the high standing and
worth of the deceased as a citizen. The services took place at the Mt. Pleasant
Church, the pastor Rev. I. M. Brashares, preaching the sermon.

eight children – one boy and seven girls, one of which died in infancy. Mrs.

Pleasant, Pickaway County, O. in which she remained until the time of her death.
She was a good neighbor, a kind and loving mother. She led a Christian life and
died a Christian death. As the end drew near she spoke in great earnestness and
tenderness of the Savior as she whispered “Oh how nice it is that Jesus died on

to her reward.
