Obituary / Additional Information: OBITUARY George W. AMBROSE of Darbyville, passed away to the shadowy land beyond the tomb, Tuesday Evening, Feb. 1, at 6:30 o'clock p.m. his death was not unexpected, for he had been lingering for a long time. consumption fed upon his system until vitality was gone and poor George laid down his burden without a murmur. He was born in Fairfax County VA., Dec. 4, 1822 and died Feb. 1, 1881, making him 58 years, 1 month, and 27 days. He was twice married and was the father of 11 children of whom eight remain to mourn his loss. He was a carpenter by trade and did considerable work in his earlier days. He served for three years with some distinction in Co. A, 45TH O.V.I. He was a good soldier and always ready for duty. He contacted a disease while in the service that always troubled him and was partly the cause of his death. In politics, George was a staunch Republican and was ever ready to do anything honorable to promote the interests of the party. He was a man well read and able to talk upon any subject of importance. In history he had but few equals, and but few men dared ever to dispute his word. He had a memory he trust and relying upon this he made a bold and adventurous debater. He was a man who did his own thinking, religious, political and otherwise, and though not a member of any church, was a believer in the bible and in the Savior of the world. Peace to his ashes, Rev. KEMPER preached the funeral at the church. Burial in Darbyville Cemetery.

Obituary / Additional Information: Samuel BOWMAN departed this life in peace and in hope of eternal life, December 30th, 1896, aged 87 years, 9 months and 25 days. Father BOWMAN was born March 5th, 1809, in Shenandoah county, Virginia, and when at the tender age of about one year his parents moved to Ohio, locating in the northwestern part of Fairfield county, from whence, five years later, they moved to Pickaway county, locating in Washington township, on the farm which is now owned and occupied by John MORRIS, and in which county he has since continuously resided. He may be truly termed a landmark, having lived in the county eighty-one years, an honored, respected and upright citizen in the true meaning of the expression. Father BOWMAN was twice married. On August 28th, 1836, he was united in holy matrimony to Elizabeth 78"> MARTIN. To this union there were born four children, two boys and two girls. Of this marriage, the wife and one son, Henry, preceded him to the spirit world. On March 8th, 1846, he was united in marriage to Mary OMAN. This union was blest with twelve children, six of whom with the companion, have also preceded him to that country from whose bourne no traveler returns. Three sisters, four sons, five daughters, thirty-nine grand children and twelve great-grand children, together with a large circle of friends mourn his demise. Father BOWMAN, at the age of sixteen was, by the hand of death, deprived of the counsel of a father, so necessary to properly fit a young man for a successful business career in a new country, but possessing the necessary ambition and traits of character he pursued an honorable and successful business career, which for honest purpose may be taken as a model. He never held a public office but once, that of school director. He would have been an honor to any public office and a credit to the people who placed him there, but he firmly refused all requests to allow himself to be placed in public positions. He was a man of retiring, yet firm character, and having determined on the right, no persuasion could tempt him to waver. Father BOWMAN has been an active and conscientious member of the United Brethren church for about sixty years, never in all that time neglecting an opportunity to do the will of his Master and leading others by act and example to do the same. He was a model husband, father, grand parent, christian and friend and had many stars in the crown of glory which was waiting for him in his Father's Kingdom. It is well. He has fought a good fight. The funeral occurred Saturday, at 10 A.M. Bethany U. B. church. Services conducted by his former pastor, Rev. Mark 79"> HART. Interment in Reber Hill Cemetery.

Obituary / Additional Information: Elizabeth Jane BRIDGER, daughter of Peter and Susannah BRIDGER, was born in Walnut township, Pickaway Co., Oh, on the 7th day of July 1859. In the days of infancy she was baptised in the name of the Triune God, and united with the St Paul Lutheran Church on the 25th day of last May. At the age of nine years she came to the home of Mr. William L. PETERS, with whom she made her home until his death, then making her home with the family of Mr. F.J. PETERS, whom she remained until her late illness. When the nature of her trouble became known she went to the Gast Sanatorium at Prospect in the hope of effecting a cure, this however proved unavailing. Then she went to St. Anthony's Hospital at Columbus where she underwent two operations without much benefit. The work of the malignant ailment could not be checked, and death came in the late hours of the day on March 5th, 1914, at the age of 54 years, 7 months, 28 days. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor in the St. Paul's church Saturday afternoon March 7 and intement was made in the Reber Hill Cemetery. Blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord.

Obituary / Additional Information: Susannah HUFFINES was born in Pickaway Co., Walnut township, Ohio January 8, 1832, and departed this life, March 5, 1916, aged 84 years, 1 month, 27 days. Mrs. BRIDGER made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W.J. HOY, for the past eighteen years, at whose home her death occured. She was the daughter of Samuel and Jane HUFFINES. "Grandma BRIDGER" as she was called, was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church in Madison township Pickaway Co., Ohio, April 25, 1847, during the pastorate of Joseph A. ROOF. She was united in marriage to Peter BRIDGER, at Circleville, Ohio October 14,1858 by Rev. Joel SWARTZ. To this union were born seven children, three of whom are still living, George and Charles BRIDGER, of Iowa, and Anna HOY of near Royalton. Elizabeth, Eliza, William, and an infant son, preceeded her to the spirit world. Her husband also preceded her in death. Grandma BRIDGER was a kind and patient sufferer, having been very feeble the past three years. She leaves to mourn their loss, three brothers and one sister, George HUFFINES, of Ashville, Ohio, John Henry Huffines, of Kansas, Doan HUFFINES, and Margaret C. MULLEN, of Iowa, one daughter and two sons, twelve grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. We shall meet, but we shall miss her, There shall be one vacant chair; We shall linger to caress her, When we breath our evening prayer. When a month ago we gathered, Joy was in her mild blue eyes; But a golden cord is severed, And our Grandma's in the skies At our fireside, sad and lonely, Oft will the bosom swell At remembrance of the conflict, How our darling grandma died How she strove to bear her suffering, Thro' the darkest of the night, And in Sunday's morning light. Passed to be with friends beyond. Funeral services were conducted at the Royalton M.E. church, Tuesday March 7, 1916 by the Rev. M.V.B. Stumo Interment Reber Hill

Obituary / Additional Information: William Henry, son of Peter and Susannah BRIDGER, was born December 6, 1863. He was baptised in infancy by the sainted Father ROOF and united himself to the U.R. Church of Ashville, Ohio, February 1st, 1883. In this church he kept his membership till 1888. In 1883 he went to Piatt county, ILL, where he made his home the remainder of his life. He found his way to the home of William Ward and desired to be taken to his mother, but was to weak to attempt the drive. His mother was staying with her daughter, Mrs. J.W. HOY of Madison township. Arrangements were made to go the next morning, but ere that morn had dawned death laid his iron grasp upon his victim; and thus the first news of his arrival to both his mother and sisters was their summons to see him a lifeless form. He departed this life at 2 o'clock a.m. August 4th. Lung disease brought his death. Age 35 years, 7 months, 28 days. The father, one sister and one brother preceded him by death. Obituary / Additional Information: The Mt. Sterling Tribune has the following account of the death of Osman Crabb on the 13 inst.: The many friends in this community of Uncle Osman Crabb, were greatly surprised and pained to hear the report Sunday that he had suddenly fell dead on the porch at his home just after he had eaten a hearty breakfast that morning. He was an old man and a much respected citizen of this and adjoining counties. He was in Sterling Saturday, the day before his death, feeling unusually well and in apparent good spirits. He was aged about 74 yers and leaves a widow and several children, among whom are Thomas Crabb, merchant, of this place and Frank with whom the old folks made their home. For several years he has failed in health and has at times complained of feeling smothered and a choking sensation signifying heart trouble, the direct cause of his death, undoubtedly. He was a consistent member of the M.E. Church, and formerly was a faithful attendant. While it is painful and sad that he was taken without any warning, yet no one was better prepared, and had their work more completed than Uncle Osman. The widow, children and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their affliction. His funeral was preached at his late residence on Monday last and the body interred in Pleasant cemetery.

He was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Dodson, who preceded him in death about two years ago.Of his immediate family there remains three daughters, Mrs. Sam METTLER, Amanda; Mrs. J. L. BEAVER, Mrs. J.W. DUVALL,Columbus; two sons, Edward S CULP, Columbus, and Harley D. CULP, Columbus. Two brothers, Noah CULP of Circleville, and Charles CULP of Lancaster, also survive. Mr. CULP had been an honored resident of Ashville for about thirty years and was highly respected by all who knew him. For some years past he had been engaged in the manufacture of mops and had built up a very lucrative business. The funeral services were held at the E. L. church, Monday at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Paul SIBERT of Roseville, a former local pastor. The body was taken to Columbus on a special car over the traction line and interment was made in Green Lawn cemetary. ***note: I have copied this from the original. I do visit this grave site. My grandparents are also buried there. The site is in excellent condition though the road is little used and a bit difficult to see.

Obituary / Additional Information: John DAVIS and his wife, Hester DAVIS, both died, last week, from the effects of old age. The latter breathed her last about twenty-two hours after her husband. He was in his 88th and she in her 76th year. The funeral was a wonderful gathering, at least 2,000 people being present. The church and school-yards adjoining and the turnpike were densely packed with carriages and buggies. The funeral discourse was delivered by Rev. H. J. DUCKWORTH, of Mt. Sterling, who was assisted in the services by Revs. MANN and SOUTHWARD. Owing to the excessive dust the sprinkler from Mt. Sterling was brought out, enabling the funeral procession to have a much pleasanter drive to the cemetery. Mr. DAVIS was interred by the side of his first wife and Mrs. DAVIS by the side of her brother, George WILSON. These old people were afflicted for several months previous to their death. DAVIS John DAVIS, one of the oldest citizens of Darby township, died at his residence at Palestine, Thursday night of last week, after a long illness, and his wife, Hester DAVIS, died on Friday, the funeral of both taking place from M. E. Church, at Palestine, Sunday afternoon. Mr. DAVIS was in his 88th year. He was born in Deercreek township, on the George WOOD farm, August 22, 1807, his father, Benjamin DAVIS, having removed there from Virginia, about the year 1802, subsequently removing to Monroe township, then to Darby township, and afterwards to Indiana, where he died in 1873. John DAVIS spent his life in Darby township, engaged in farming and stock raising. In 1830, he was married to Elizabeth CRABB, of Ross county. To them were born sixteen children, ten of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, and among the survivors are Joseph and David DAVIS, of Darby township, and William DAVIS and Mrs. Frederick OWEN, of Monroe township. Mrs. DAVIS died in 1882, and some time thereafter Mr. DAVIS was married to Hester MATLOCK, whose death occurred as above, at the age of 77 years. transcribed by Lisa Hayashi from the Democrat and Watchman (Circleville, Ohio), September 7, 1894, held by the Pickaway County Genealogical Society, Circleville, Ohio.
