LONG, who was among the well-known early settlers of Miami county, died Thursday, July 1, at her home on East Shawnee street. She had been an invalid a number of years. Her death was the result of old age and a general decline. Mrs. LONG was born near Carlton(sic), Fairfield county, Ohio, May 13, 1832. Her maiden name was Lavina SAYLOR. She grew to womanhood and was married there to Mr. LONG. In 1857 they emigrated to Linn county, from where they came to Paola in 1866, reared a large family of children, and both made this their home. A number of times he was elected to the office of city marshal of Paola, and from 1880 to 1884 was sheriff of Miami county. Mother LONG was a member of the Methodist church all her life. She had the distinction of being among the very few remaining daughters of soldiers who were in the revolutionary war and also of the war of 1812. Her father was a soldier in the former war and a brigadier general in the war of 1812. She was devoted to her home, the mother of ten children, and lived to see her husband and seven children pass away before she was called to join them. The first was an infant that was later followed by the two eldest daughters, Mrs. Lucy McGEHEE and Mrs. Fannie LONG. Next was the eldest son, Samuel LONG, who died in 1896. The next to go was Mrs. Cal SHERIDAN, wife of the late John C. SHERIDAN, who died in 1903. Her husband died in 1907, who was followed by their son, George Edward LONG, who died in 1909, and several years later by Mrs. Adeline HERCKEN(sic), wife of Earl HERCKEN. Her living children are L. McArthur LONG, of Kansas City, Mo.; B. M. LONG, of Memphis, Tenn., and O. E. LONG, of Kansas City, Mo. She is also survived by one brother at Wichita. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Obituary / Additional Information: Suicide, On Wednesday of last week, April 27th, George Frederick Mader of this city, committed suicide by shooting himself. He left town that morning and went to the residence of Adam WAGERLY, in the northest past of Circleville township, where he borrowed a shot-gun to kill some game. He started for the woods and the report of the gun was heard twice, but that was the "last of him". On Saturday afternoon, a son of Mr. Wagerly came to town in search of Mader and the gun, when he learned that Mader had not been home since Wednesday. Suspicious were aroused, and young Wagerly went home at once, and in the woods about thirty yards from the barn, found the body of Mader lying beside a log, on one end of which was his ammunition. From the position of the body, he must have laid down on his back, used the ramrod to fire the gun, raising his head and receiving the charge in his forehead making a large hole and tearing away part of his head. The gun was heavily loaded with buckshot. When discovered his hands still clenched the weapon. The body was brought to this city, Saturday evening, and Jason CASE, Coroner, held an inquest, the jury rendering a verdict that the deceased came to his death by a gunshot wound, inflicted by himself, while in a state of insanity. The deceased had been subject to mental aberration for considerable length of time, and frequently threated self destruction. He was a son of Jacob Mader, Sen, and 28 years, of age, was a baker by trade, and formerly kept the Montana grocery, capitulating to the Crusaders last Spring. He had a wife and child, but his wife had not been living with him lately. His funeral took place Sunday afternoon, from his father's residence.
