Louis Albright was born in Hanover , Pa. in 1827 . His wife Mary was born in Ohio in 1839. They had one daughter born in 1860 , Wilhelmina . Louis was a gunsmith and carpenter by trade . County court records indicate he was Putnam County Sheriff from 1870 - 1874 .

On May 5 , 1863 , Louis received a patent ( # 38,366 ) for a "Breech - Loading Firearm " . Patented was a hinged and sliding breech - block with an external hammer and containing internal lock parts . Metallic , cloth , or paper cartridges could be used with the action as well as percussion caps or wafer primers .
