Brief history of the publication of directories for Mansfield

• The first Directory of Mansfield was published in 1858 by C.S. Williams, who commenced the publication of the Cincinnati Directory about the year 1846.  In 1858, Mr. Williams published directories of many of the smaller towns, including Oberlin, Elyria, Mt. Vernon and Medina, the latter of which had 1,484 inhabitants in 1880.
• The second Directory was printed at THE HERALD Office by Myers Bros in 1867.  It was compiled by W.A. McAfee and J.W. Yeaman, evidently inexperienced hands, as their work shows.
• The third directory was issued in the summer of 1869 by A. Bailey, and included the city of Akron, Ohio.
• The fourth directory was the one published for 1871, and was also published by A. Bailey.
• The fifth directory was published in 1874 by Lowenstein and Heineman.
• The sixth directory was a joint directory for Mansfield and Mt. Vernon, published by Wiggins & McKillop in 1875.
• The seventh directory, published in 1877 was done by Potter & Thompson, of Canton.
• The eighth directory, in 1881, was published by Geo. U. Harn & Bro. of THE MANSFIELD HERALD.
• The ninth directory was published in 1883, also by Geo. U. Harn & Bro. of THE MANSFIELD HERALD.
