RICHLAND SHIELD & BANNER:  12 October 1895, Vol. LXXVIII, No. 22

The distressing death of John M. Clark of Franklin Township, caused by a tree falling on him, is received by the SHIELD with more than ordinary regret, for the reason that Mr. Clark had at various times been the SHIELD'S local correspondent in Franklin and Jackson Townships.  He was an excellent young man, intelligent, honorable and upright, and a valuable man in his community.  Men of this stamp are missed, and one of the inscrutable things in this world is why the useful are removed while so many of those who are regarded as worthless and worse are permitted to cumber the earth.

Later in the same issue ...

The funeral services of the late John M. Clark were held at the residence in Franklin Township today and were attended by a large number of friends.  The services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. N.H. Loose of Shelby.  The pallbearers were the four brothers of the deceased, William H. Clark, Stephan A. Clark, Fred Clark and Christian Clark of Franklin Township.  Interment at Shelby.
