Uriah Franklin Armstrong was born October 15, 1821.  After an illness of three weeks, he died Jan. 23, 1895.  He was married to Minerva Perine, Oct. 20, 1853.  He was the father of five daughters, all of whom survive him.  Mr. Armstrong was born and raised on a farm four miles south of Bellville, his parents being among the first settlers of Richland County, having moved here in the year 1815.

Upon starting in life for himself he chose the profession of teaching.  Many of our middle aged citizens were among his first pupils.  Later in life he took a clerkship in a dry goods store and afterwards entered the mercantile business for himself which he followed until his death.  From his youth his highest ambition was to live an upright Christian life.  When he was about twenty years of age he united with the Baptist church, and on April 3, 1875, under the pastorate of the Rev. Jno. O. Proctor, he became a member of the Presbyterian church at this place.

Mr. Armstrong always advocated that there are certain laws that must be obeyed to secure happiness.  If a physical law is disobeyed humanity must suffer, and the same is equally true when a spiritual law is broken.  He held that we must lead a pure life within, if we would be happy, and that Christianity is for the betterment of mankind and must effect a change in the life of an individual.

He was a loving husband a dear father and as such will be very greatly missed by his family.  His children realize that his counsels were especially wise and will be very greatly missed.  For the sake of his family which was so near and dear to him, he longed to live, but as his sufferings increased he called upon his Savior for release.  His last moments were passed in that calm, quiet manner, which characterized his whole life.  The funeral services, which were held on Friday afternoon, the 25th. inst., at his late residence, were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. C.W. Caldwell and the local lodge, I.O.O.F., of which he has been a member for 37 years.

Thus has passed away an old and highly respected citizen and one who will be missed from the daily walks of life as well as from his family -- to whom we extend our prayerful sympathy.  "Therefore be ye also ready:  for in such an hour as ye thin not the Son of Man cometh."
