Moon, Edward -- Edward Moon, a young man 18 years of age, met with a very sudden death Thursday morning about 10:30 o'clock while plowing on the Dr. Jones farm three miles north of the city.  For the past four years he has been working for W.S. Etzwiler, the tenant on the Jones farm, Mr. Etzwiler having taken Moon from the Ashland County Infirmary and the young man has been with him ever since.  Moon was engaged in plowing in one of the fields of the farm.  He was sitting on a sulky plow which was pulled by three horses.  A few minutes before the fatality occurred Mr. Etzwiler had been in the field working near Moon but had gone to the house for something.  While he was gone the accident occurred.  While the horses were turning at a corner of the field, they became tangled up and one of the animals fell on top of Moo.  The horses all fell and were unable to get up until a man named Crall, who lives near, saw the trouble and came to the rescue.  It seems that Moon was gasping when Crall arrived and when Etzwiler arrived a little later the unfortunate young man was dead.  The body was removed to the farm house.  Mr. Etzwiler came into the city Thursday afternoon and informed the infirmary directors of the death, and the Ashland County directors were in turn notified.  Mr. Etzwiler does not know whether or not the young man has relatives living.  It is thought that Moon was in the Ashland County infirmary several years before Etzwiler took him.  [Semi-Weekly News:  28 May 1897, Vol. 13, No. 43]

Moorehouse, Thomas -- It is with sincere regret that the SHIELD this morning announces the death of Thomas Moorehouse, who died at 5 o'clock last evening.  Mr. Moorehouse was taken sick with malarial fever about four weeks ago, but it was only a few days since that he took to his bed.  His death last night, therefore, is a surprise to his friends.  The funeral will take place from his late residents in the Hedges' Building at the corner of Diamond and North Park Streets, at 2 o'clock on Monday afternoon.  A wife and four children survive the deceased, all of whom reside in this city and Richland County:  George Moorehouse, of this city;  Charles, Misses Sarah and Emma, who reside at the old homestead on the Marion Road.  Mr. Moorehouse was born 76 years ago at Bilham, Yorkshire, England, and came to America in 1854.  He located on a farm three and a half miles southwest of this city.  He was married to Miss Eliza Downend at Bilham, but she died in 1876 and twelve years ago he was married to Mrs. Margaret Hull.  --  [Richland Shield & Banner:  30 September 1893, Vol. LXXVI, No. 19]

Miller, who formerly lived here.  It was expected that Mrs. Moorhouse would return home here on Tuesday, but Sunday night George Cox received a telegram stating that the old lady had died suddenly.  No funeral arrangements will be made until Mrs. Rush Field, of Ocean Springs, Minn., is heard from.  Mrs. Field's husband was formerly landlord of the old Wiler house.  Mrs. Moorhouse's maiden name was Margaret Baggs and she was born in Washington County, Pa., 88 years ago, came to Ohio with her parents in 1822 and settled in Cadiz, which place was her home until her marriage with George Hull in 1836.  Mr. Hull died in 1879, and tow years later the widow married Thomas Moorhouse, father of George Moorhouse, the attorney.  Mr. Moorhouse died in 1893 and being again a widow Mrs. Moorhouse was often called "Aunty" Hull the name she was known by for so many years.  "Aunty" Moorhouse was of the Methodist faith and was a devout member of that denomination for many years.  For nearly 65 years she catered to the public as landlady and manager of a hotel or boarding house.  For many years she was in charge of a boarding house on the site of what is now the Purdy block.  Mr. and Mrs. Hull came to Mansfield in 1838, landed at the Teegarden -- now the Vonhof -- and soon afterwards bought the Pugh house, where the Masonic Temple now stands, changed the name of the hotel to the Pennsylvania house which they conducted successfully for a number of years.  In the spring of 1851, they leased what was known as the bank building, opposite the old "North American" and there kept boarding house for 27 years.  --  [Bellville Messenger:  09 July 1903, Vol. 11, No. 27 as reprinted from the Mansfield News]

Morehead, Phineas -- About 2 o'clock yesterday morning Phineas Morehead, chief engineer at the street car station, sent for the day man, Geo. Printup, to come on duty, as he was not feeling well.  Printup did not arrive until nearly 4 o'clock, when Morehead told him that his heart troubled him.  He gradually grew worse until it became necessary to move him from the engine room.  He was taken to the office and laid on a couch.  About half an hour after this he expired.  The deceased had been troubled with heart disease for a number of years and it was this that caused his death.  Later in the day the remains were taken to J.A. Niman's undertaking establishment, while in the meantime Superintendent Jno. F. Gay notified the wife and children that their husband and father was no more.  In the afternoon the remains were removed to his home on Lexington Avenue, at which place the funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 o'clock and the remains will be taken to Crestline for burial.  Phineas Morehead was about 55 years old and has four children.  One daughter is living at Denver, Col.  He was a practical engineer and was the first man to run an electric light engine in Mansfield.  When the street cars first began running, he took charge of the engine at the station.  He did not remain long, however, but went to the Mansfield Machine Works, which institution had employed him before and was glad to see him return.  On March 20th. the Street Car Company was without a chief engineer and lost no time in securing Mr. Morehead, who had only worked there a few days when death came.  Mr. Morehead was a member of the Mansfield Machine Works Relief Association and that body will turn out at his funeral.  --  [Richland Shield & Banner:  06 April 1889, Vol. LXXI, No. 46]

Morgan, John C. -- Lexington.  John C. Morgan's sudden death at his home here April 5 caused much gloom to pervade the village.  He ate a hearty breakfast and immediately a numb sensation began to creep over him.  He spoke a few words and then sank into a deep lethargy which ended in death's eternal sleep in the afternoon, the victim of apoplexy.  Interment was Wednesday afternoon in Shauck's Cemetery, four miles south of here.  Services were held at the church there, the Rev. Mr. Amsbaugh delivering a discourse.  The deceased was aged 66 years, 9 months and 28 days, having been born June 15, 1830, in Morrow County.  Mr. Morgan was the ideal type of physical manhood, weighing 240 pounds and he was of symmetrical proportions and his alert step and the bright glow of health that suffused his face indicated that he would be the last one here to feel death's sting.  His wife and a daughter, Mrs. John Held, of Johnsville, survive him.  He was highly esteemed for his genial and generous impulses and the hearts of his many friends beat responsive to the bitter anguish that filled the hearts of his kindred when he was laid away in the eternal night of the grave.  [Semi-Weekly News:  13 April 1897, Vol. 13, No. 30]

Muscroft, S.J. -- MUSCROFT -- At his home near Mansfield, January 2d., 1884, S.J. Muscroft, author of Drummer Boy of Shiloh, aged 45 years. The subject of this sketch was of English parentage and was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, January 19th., 1838. Death removed his parents when he was at the tender age of 4 years, leaving him to be nurtured and cared for by relatives. The child growing into boyhood, soon manifested a courageous spirit. His self-reliance and determination grew with age. Having soon acquired habits of industry and thrift he was always self-supporting. As a soldier, he enlisted at Mansfield, August 6th., 1862, in Co. B., 102d. O.V.I., serving with credit and distinction in several battles, the hardships of a soldier's life soon told on his health -- being sent to Athens, he was captured by Gen. Forrest and sent with other sick comrades to Cahawba, Miss., where suffering the hardships of a prison for 9 months, he was exchanged at Vicksburg. Mr. Muscroft was widely known as the author of "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh". His fertile brain and sympathetic heart doubtless caught inspiration from the pathetic story of the finding of the little drummer boy on Shiloh's field, his tender care by little innocent hands, &c. which, coupled with his own experiences and hardships, his genius wove into the beautiful and pathetic drama of the "Drummer Boy of Shiloh" performed and appreciated all over the land. Mr. Muscroft was married to Mrs. E. Baker, daughter of John Hull, Sr., May 17th., 1875, the issue of said union belong three daughters, who survive him and mourn the departure of a kind and affectionate husband and indulgent father. That he had talent and genius none will gainsay. Of a kind and generous nature, he was always more ready to give than receive. His charity was boundless as his fidelity and integrity were tried and true, which qualities of head and heart far outshone his faults which were but human. His death was not wholly unexpected by his neighbors and friends, who so kindly and willingly nursed him through a long and painful sickness, which he bore with a calm and Christian fortitude so meekly. His requests were fully carried out, his remains being escorted to the Episcopal Church, after appropriate and impressive remarks, were made by Rev. Dr. Doolittle, Venus Lodge of the Masons, of which he was a worthy member, took charge and buried him according to the beautiful ritual of that Order. The deceased was also a member of the Knights of Honor and of the Grand Army of the Republic, which latter organization paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of their deceased comrade by turning out a large escort to the cemetery in very inclement weather. Thus have we buried our Brother, comrade and friend. Farewell. As we drop the sympathetic tear we also deposit another flower on thy new made grave. -- [MANSFIELD HERALD, 10 January 1884, Vol. 34, No. 8]

Myers, A.J. -- A Good Man Gone -- Esq. A. J. Myers, a prominent figure of Worthington tp. and of Richland county, yielded up all there was of earth and went home to his Maker last Saturday morning, about 2 a.m., after a very long and lingering siege of lung trouble, being perfectly rational and patient to the very last.  The funeral of this noble man, whose life is well worthy emulation by the very large concourse of sympathizing friends in attendance who wished to show him homage, took place on Tuesday, April 4, 1893, at 11 a.m., from the family residence, under the auspices of Lucullus Lodge, No 121, K. of P., of which deceased was a charter member, assisted by Sturges Lodge, No. 357, I.O.O.F. and Samuel Bell Post, No. 536, Department of Ohio, G.A.R., and accompanied by a large number of brothers from abroad belonging to above orders.  The very neat casket and its honored remains were borne to the M. P. Church with the highest honors at the command of these noble orders, where a most fitting funeral sermon was delivered over the remains by Rev. Hissey, of Zanesville.  At the close of which Attorney L. C. Mengert, of Mansfield, made a few short and very eulogistic remarks.  This latter, we believe, was in keeping with a particular request of the deceased before he died.  After the services at the church had been gone through with the funeral cortege was again taken up, when the remains were borne to the cemetery on the hill where they were given a last earthly home by the orders named.  Adam Jemison Myers was born in Jefferson tp., Oct. 6, 1841.  He enlisted at Bellville, Sept. 1, 1861, as a private in Co. Myers, Amos M. -- ACCIDENT, An Old Resident is Killed.  As the result of the breaking of the “kingbolt” in his carriage on Saturday night, Amos M. Myers, aged 65 years, residing about six miles northeast of the city, was thrown from his carriage and died Sunday afternoon as the result of his injuries.  He leaves a wife but no children.  The accident occurred about 6 o’clock in the evening as Myers was driving to his home, after making his regular Saturday trip this city, about a mile from Spring Mill on the Spring Mill road, near the farm of W.S. Leppo.  About 7 o’clock, James Wentz, rural mail carrier on route No. 1, stopped a team of runaway horses near his home in Spring Mill.  The team were harnessed but were free from any vehicle.  Wentz recognized the horses as belonging to Amos Myers, and, suspecting trouble of some sort, went back up the road in the direction from which the horses had come.  He found Myers lying face downward in the road, where he had fallen when thrown from the buggy.  Examination showed that the “kingbolt” had broken letting the front end of the carriage down, thus precipitating Myers into the road.  The fall fractured his skull and he never regained consciousness although this death did not occur until 4:45 o’clock Sunday afternoon. <<Text illegible>> as Myers was driving alone when it took place.  The general idea, however, is that while going along at a fair gait, the carriage went over a stone or some other obstruction, the shock causing the “kingbolt” which holds the carriage body to the front axle to snap.  This threw Myers from the buggy, at the same time losing the horses and frightening them so that they ran away, the singletree, and front wheels being lost by the roadside during the mad course of the crazed team from the scene of the accident to Spring Mill.  The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock from the residence of the deceased.  The burial will be made at Zider’s Cemetery.  Amos M. Myers has been a resident of Richland County all his life, coming there with his parents six week after his birth in Pennsylvania.  He is one of the old residents of the county and has a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who will be shocked to hear of his sudden and tragic death.  – reprinted from Monday’s (Mansfield Daily) Shield.  [Butler Times:  15 August 1903, Vol. XI, No. 4]
