Bound Over To Probate Court on Charge of Stealing a Wheel
Allen Shumaker, aged 12 years, was this morning arrested by Officer Starr on the charge of stealing a bicycle belonging to Will Miller who is employed at Peters' drug store. The bicycle was stolen from the front of the store last Friday night. The make of the wheel was noted by Officer Starr and he kept a sharp lookout for anyone riding a wheel like the one owned by Miller. Young Shumaker who was recently arrested of stealing a certain lady's pocketbook left in a buggy in front of Kennedy's Store, was seen riding a bicycle. As it is known that he did not possess a wheel, suspicion was aroused, Officer Starr notified, who made an investigation. The officer went to the Shumaker home and was told by Allen's mother that he owned no wheel. A search was made and the wheel found hidden in the barn. When taken out of the Hayes school young Shumaker said the wheel he was riding belonged to Sam Hazlett's boys. Later on he said that the statement was false and confessed to his taking the wheel. He was brought to the calaboose, and locked up, to appear before Mayor Long.
At a hearing this afternoon young Shumaker was bound over to Judge Brinkerhoff's court at Mansfield. The boy made a strong plea for another chance to be good and lead a better life in the future, but as this was not the first offense along this line, it didn't go with Mayor Long. He will no doubt be sentenced to serve time at the reform farm in Lancaster. - Shelby Herald. Submitted by Shelley Hill. [Mansfield News, Tuesday, 15 April 1902, page 6 columns 1&2]
