CAIRNS --- John G. Cairns

.....he was born in Mansfield Jan. 27, 1840. He enlisted in Co. E, 32d O.V.I., Jul 27, 1861, for three years; he received a shoulder injury. After his return in September, 1864, he engaged in farming and resided in Madison Township about six years. He was married to Helen M. LIVENSPARGER March 14, 1865; they have had eight children.

CAIRNS --- Joseph Cairns

.....he was born in Mansfield in October, 1837. Sometime after, his father moved to Jackson on the farm now occupied by his three sons. The subject of this notice has remained on the farm since. He was married to Miss Sarah KUHN, of Plymouth Township, May, 1862; they have had ten children.

CAIRNS --- Robert CAIRNS
...was born on the McFall corner in Mansfield, Feb. 3, 1815.He was married in 1835 to Elizabeth GORDON. Mr. and Mrs. CAIRNS are the parents of nine children. Mr. CAIRNS' father, Joseph CAIRNS, came to this county from Muskingum County directly after Hull's surrender.

CAKE --- Hiram CAKE
... was born in Canton, Stark County, Ohio, Aug. 23, 1823. He came to Richland County May 2, 1840 and immediately engaged as a clerk in the dry-goods house of the late William McNULTY. He fought in the Civil War, went out to California in 1852 and after an absence of 14 months returned to Richland County. He was married in 1850 to Maria L. McCULLOUGH, oldest daughter of Judge David McCULLOUGH. Mrs. Maria CAKE died in Mansfield in 1869. They were the parents of eight children.

CAMPBELL --- James CAMPBELL
He was born in Wayne County, Ohio, in 1829, and came to this county (Richland) in 1837. He was married to Malinda A. BELL in 1852. She was born in this county in 1834.

CANTWELL --- William CANTWELL
... was born in August, 1786, in Brooke County, Virginia. He married Ann WILLIAMS, and afterward removed to Jefferson Co., Ohio, where they remained until 1820, when they removed to Richland County and settled on a farm two miles from Mansfield on the Spring Mill Road where they resided almost continuously up until the death of Mrs. CANTWELL in January, 1850. Mr. CANTWELL died in 1857. They raised a family of twelve children.

CAREY --- F. C. CAREY
... was born in Ashland County (formerly Richland), Perry Township, came to Mansfield recently and purchased the soap factory which was established in 1868 and has been one of the leading enterprises of this city.

CARPENTER --- George F. CARPENTER
Attorney, was born Aug. 8, 1820, in Worthington Township (Richland County). He was married July 2, 1852 to Jennette L. REID of Mansfield. They have six children. Mr. CARPENTER came to Mansfield in the fall of 1842, studied law with Hames PURDY, was admitted to the bar in February, 1845, in New Lisbon, Ohio.

CARPENTER --- W. B. CARPENTER
Tanner, was born Sept. 15, 1825, in Worthington Township, (Richland County). He was married Sept. 15, 1846, to Emeline GROVE who was born in 1828 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

CARROTHERS --- James CARROTHERS
....born in Washington township, this county, April 6, 1830, where he resided until the age of 15 years, when he went to Williams Co.; leaving there to go to Michigan, where he stayed two years; then to Wisconsin, where he remained until 1857, when he removed to Minnesota, where he remained until he was compelled to leave on account of Indian troubles in 1862. He was first married to Miss Helen MARR-PADDOCK; they had two children; he married his second wife, Miss Mary Jane FERGUSON, Jan. 18, 1876; they have two children.

CARROTHERS --- Samuel CARROTHERS
(deceased), was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1780 and was the only son of George and Jane WORKMAN CARROTHERS, who were old residents of that county and came to this country before the Revolutionary War. He (Samuel) was married to Mary DYE who was born in 1781. They removed to this county in 1815. They were the parents of five children.

CHAFFEE --- [Rev.] Herbert W. CHAFFEE
...., pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Willimantic, Conn., in 1844. .... In 1870 he removed to Franklin County, Kan., not far from Ottawa. He was engaged in teaching and farming until the spring of 1873, when he entered the ministry, joining the South Kansas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was appointed to ... Parsons in 1882 and 1883. He was married in the fall of 1872 to Miss Rasha A. SMITH, of Princeton, Kan. Her parents were from Richland County, Ohio. Her father is a lineal descendent from James SMITH, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.....

CHANDLER --- J. M. CHANDLER
(deceased), was born in Jeromeville, now in Ashland County, Ohio, Oct. 15, 1815.... at the early age of 21 graduated with honor at the Ohio Medical College at Cincinnati. In the year 1842 he removed to Mansfield and commenced practice which continued until the time of his death which occured Jan. 18, 1863. He was married August 12, 1845, to Sarah MOUNT. She died Aug. 10, 1847. He married Dec. 30, 1852, R. E. MOUNT, who still survives.

CHANNING --- J. R. CHANNING
....farmer and stock-raiser; was born and educated in England, and the family came to this country in 1851, and to Plymouth Township in 1870. He was married in October, 1864, to Miss Margaret FULMER, of Ashland Co., Ohio; they have four children, all boys.

CHAPMAN --- John CHAPMAN (Johnny Appleseed)
Born at or near Springfield, Mass., in the year 1775. About the year 1801 he came with his half-brother to Ohio and a year or two later his father's family removed to Marietta, Ohio. Johnny's father, Nathaniel, senior, moved from Marietta to Duck Creek, where he died. The CHAPMAN family was a large one and many of Johnny's relatives were scattered throughout Ohio and Indiana. Johnny is renowned for the rearing and cultivation of apple trees from the seed throughout the region. Johnny died in 1845.

CHARLES --- C. C. CHARLES
He was born in Cuyahoga County, June 26, 1824. He remained there until he was 16 years old, when he came to this county with his parents. He got married to Miss Ruthan ENLOW, April 27, 1874. She was born in Washington County, Penn., in March, 1822 and came to this county in 1830. (Note: The year of their marriage must be incorrect as they had eight children!).

CHEW --- Amon S. CHEW
....the son of William and Leddie CHEW; he was born in October, 1770, in the State of Maryland, and Mrs. CHEW was born in old Virginia about the year 1787. Our subject, Mr. Amon CHEW, was born in Harrison Co., this State, Oct. 15, 1811, and, about the year 1822, his parents removed to this county, Monroe Township. Mr. CHEW lived their about twelve years, and then removed to this township; this subject is the thirteenth child of his parents, who raised a family of seventeen children. He was married to Miss Elizabeth GUTHERIE; they raised a family of two children; his wife died Dec. 18, 1837; in the year 1839, on April 2, he was again married to Miss Mary HACKETT; they raised a family of six children.

CHEW --- E. J. CHEW
....born Dec. 18, 1853, in this township (Blooming Grove) and is the second and youngest child of George H. and Sarah P. CHEW, who was also born in this county. After the death of his parents, his uncle, Amon CHEW, took him to raise when but a mere boy; he remained with his uncle until the age of 16 years.

CHEW --- Ezekiel CHEW, Sr.
....deceased, was born May 13, 1805, near Winchester, Va.; while he was the infant of the family, his father, the late William CHEW, came to Ohio and settled in Harrison Co., and at the age of 17 he came to Richland Co., with his uncle Thomas DICKERSON. May 27, 1827, at the age of 22, he and Elizabeth HACKETT were married. His wife died February, 1847, leaving six children. He again married, on June 24, 1850, to Amanda M. PHELPS; two children were born.

CHURCH --- James CHURCH
....he was born in Virginia, in 1793; when he was about 7 years old, his parents moved to Wetzel Co. W. Va; his father, Henry CHURCH, was an English soldier under Lord Cornwallis in the Revolutionary struggle; he lived to be 109 years old. The subject of this sketch was married Oct. 3, 1813, to Susanna HELMS, of Pennsylvania; after his marriage, he settled in Virginia, where he lived about five years, and then moved, with his wife and two children to Mifflin Township (Richland Co.), where he lived about one year; he then bought a tract of land of Ebenezer WILLIAMS, which he improved seven years, before moving to where he now resides in 1831. Mr. and Mrs. CHURCH have raised eight children.

CLABERG --- Jacob CLABERG
....he was born March 11, 1814, in Fairfield Co., Ohio and is a son of Abraham and Mary CLABERG, who came to this county in the spring of 1816. The subject of this sketch is the oldest child of a family of seven children; he was married in the fall of 1839, to Elizabeth URICH of Ashland Co; she died in 1840, and in the spring of 1845, he married Susanna SNEER, who was born Oct. 14, 1819, in what is now Butler Township. CLAPP --- Emilius CLAPP
Wine mechant, is the descendant in the seventh generation of Roger CLAPP, who came to this country from England in 1630... Solomon, the father of Emilius CLAPP, was born in Easthampton, Mass., Sept. 2, 1782, and died Nov 25, 1827. He married Miss Paulina AVERY. Their son, Emilius was born Dec. 5, 1808. He came to Ohio in the spring of 1832. He returned to Massachusetts in the fall of 1832 where he married Lydia HUTCHINSON April 15, 1833. He returned to Ohio in 1833. He came to Mansfield in 1850.

CLAPPER --- Samuel CLAPPER
was born in what is now Blair Co., Penn., Nov 7, 1814. When he was a child, his parents came to Ogdensburg, Stark Co., Ohio, where they lived for some time, then moved to Dover, Wayne Co., and then removed to Newville, Richland Co. He was married to Miss Susan PARCHER Jan. 7, 1846 and they have three daughters and one son.

CLARK --- Andrew CLARK
....proprietor planing-mill and sash blind and door factory; was born in 1833, on Connecticut; when 22 years of age went to California; in 1869 he moved to Plymouth. He was married, in 1870, to Miss Margaret COE, of Ashland Co.,; they have two children.

CLARK --- Calvin Clark

.....he was born in Washington Co., Penn., Aug 23, 1802; his parents emigrated from Pennsylvania, with their family of six children, in the spring of 1815, and settled two miles south of Mansfield; they remained there about three years, and then sold out and moved three miles north of Mansfield; they remained there some seven years, then went to live with their son, Calvin. When Calvin was about 20 years of age, he left the farm, working at brickmaking for two years, then took lease of land in Mansfield. After leaving the lease, he moved into Sharon Township, about one mile south of where Shelby now stands; he purchased where he now lives in 1829, and two years later moved on it. He was married to Miss Mary FULTON, of Richland, in October, 1824; they had seven children. His wife died in October, 1874.

CLELAND --- Amaziah Cleland
....born in Washington Co., Penn., Oct. 11, 1822; at the age of 2 years, his parents removed to this township (Blooming Grove), where Mr. CLELAND has since lived, with the exception of about eighteen years he spent in Huron Co. (New Haven). He is the youngest of six children of John and Margaret CLELAND. He was married, April 1, 1849, to Ellen L. STEWART, who was born in Steuben Co., Penn., in 1829. They have seven children.

CULLEN --- Garvis CULLEN
retired farmer; he was born in Lincolnshire, England, July 14, 1803; about 1831, he emigrated to the United States and remained a few months in New York; he then came to Mansfield, where he remained until the following spring, then went to Plymouth Township. He was married to Miss Mary JACKSON, of Richland County, May 18, 1845; they have one son.

CUSTER --- George W. CUSTER
...born in Allen County, Ohio, in the year 1842. During his early youth his father made several removals, first to Auglaize County, then to Morrow County, then to Richland County. In 1864 he married Fidelia WORCESTER of Morrow County, where he again became a resident until 1872, when he again became a resident of Richland County, Settling in the village of Lexington.
