RICHLAND COUNTY BIOGRAPHIES
GAILEY --- Richard GAILEY, attorney at law
Younger of the two sons of the Rev. Richard GAILEY; the elder
being the Rev. John GAILEY of the United Presbyterian
Church. Richard, the subject of this sketch, was born May
5, 1845, in Madison, Westmoreland Co., Penna. In 1849 his father
removed to this county and first settled in Monroe Township and
subsequently moved to Lexington.... After his admission to the
bar he practiced his profession in Mansfield, Ohio, until 1872
when he returned to Pennsylvania and practiced in Parker City and
Pittsburgh until the death of his father, in 1875, when he
returned to Lexington where he practiced until May 1, 1880 when
he came to Mansfield and entered into copartnership with H. D.
KEITH.... During the war of the rebellion Mr. GAILEY served in
the 87th O.V.I. and also in the 86th O.V.I. In 1872 he was
married to Miss Sarah E. NUTTING, by whom he has two sons, John
and Richard

GASS --- Benjamin GASS
Oldest son of William and Jane GASS, was born in Brook Co.,
Va, on the 12th of June, A.D. 1794. He came with his
parents to Fairfield Co., Ohio, in June of 1800; then to Knox
Co., Ohio, in the spring of 1806, and to that part of the
"new purchase" (so called) which is now Troy Township,
Richland Co., Ohio, in the spring of 1812.... He was married in
January of 1827, to Miss Elisabeth McCLUER; they raised
three sons and two daughters, all of whom are now living except
their youngest son, James G. GASS, who was a soldier through the
rebellion and died a few years after it was suppressed...
Bejamin's wife died in May of 1864 and in the autumn of 1867 he
was again married to Miss Sarah M. CREIGH of Mansfield who still
survives him.... He left his farm a year or more before his death
and resided on his wife's property in Mansfield where he died in
February of 1867.... His wife lives on Market Street.

GASS --- Isaac GASS
Youngest son of William and Rebecca GASS, was born in Troy
Township, Richland Co., Ohio, in October, 1819.... Was licensed
an attorney in 1848. In the spring of 1848 was married to Miss
Amelia B. COATES. They had one son and two daughters.
Their son, Mr. Florean P. GASS, and daughter, Bertie, still live
in Mansfield. Their oldest daughter, Mary, died some years
ago. Isaac removed to Mansfield and commenced business as a
lawyer immediately after his marriage.... In the fall of
1861 he raised a company to help in the suppression of the
rebellion... Served as State Senator representing Richland and
Ashland Counties and subsequently to that was Mayor of Mansfield
and Justice of the Peace, which last office he held at
the time of his death in October of 1875

GATES --- M. M. GATES
Superintendent of the county infirmary, was born in Richland
County, Ohio, November 16, 1840, the son of Geo. and Elizabeth
GATES. He was married in 1874 to Lydia A. GERMAN.

GATES --- Martin GATES
....born in Washington Co., Penn., Dec. 10, 1821, where he
resided until 1823, when his parents removed to this county;
although he has lived a part of his time in different townships,
he now lives in this township, (Blooming Grove), where he has
been about fifteen years. In the year 1843 on the 9th of May, he
was married to Miss Frances URQUHART; they have reared a family
of ten children.

GEARY --- Mrs. Elizabeth GEARY
....the widow of the late Joseph GEARY, who was born in Allegheny
Co., Penn., April 8, 1806; when a small boy his parents removed
to Harrison Co., Ohio; he remained there over thirty years, then
went to Tuscarawas Co., where he stayed five years, when he came
to this county. Mrs. GEARY was married to Mr. GEARY in the fall
of 1844; they reared a family of thirteen children. Mrs. GEARY
was born in Jefferson Co., this State, March 13, 1826.

GERHARD --- John F. GERHARD
...was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Oct. 3, 1835. He
came to this county (Richland) with his parents when he was two
years old. He remained with his parents until he was 23 when he
married Elizabeth CHRONISTER in 1858. She was born in this county
March 13, 1837.... His father (Mr. GERHARD's) was born in
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Oct.ber 14, 1810. He is still
living and is now 70 years old. Mrs. Gerhard was born in
Harrisburg, Penn., June 9, 1813 and died July 10, 1871. She was
58 years old.

GETMAN --- J.B. GETMAN
....druggist; born in Columbia, Herkimer Co., N.Y.; March 30,
1857, came to Plymouth. He was married, July, 1859, to Miss Helen
M. WICKS, who was born at Genoa, Cayuga Co., N.Y. and who came to
Ohio when 4 years old; they have three children.

GIPE --- Benjamin Gipe
....he was born in Lancaster Co., Penna., March 30, 1813; came to Ohio in 1851. Married to Elizabeth CONLEY, who was born in Lancaster Co., Penn., May 16, 1813; they have ten children. Mr. GIPE has a well-improved farm in this township (Franklin).

GRIZE --- Caleb GRIZE
He was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, March 14, 1831. He
came to this county (Richland) with his parents in 1840. He was
married to Miss Mary Ann GERHART, Oct. 1, 1857. She was born in
Lancaster County, Penn., Nov. 8, 1841. In 1861 his first wife
died. About six years after he married hi second wife, Miss
Margaret Ann MILLER, Oct. 23, 1867.

GROVE --- Lawrence A. GROVE
....born in Cumberland Co., Penn., July 31, 1852, where he
resided until the age of 18 years, when he went to Illinois and
stayed there one year; thence he returned to Ohio and went to
Stark Co., and remained there one year; he then went to Dauphin
Co., Penn., where he stayed two years, and from there he went to
Cumberland Co., where he remained one year, thence to Baltimore,
Md., where he remained one year, and the came to this county.

GRUBB --- G. W. GRUBB
...was born in the village of Lexington, Richland County, in
1840. He was married in the spring of 1866 to Miss Elizabeth
KEISTER of Ashland, Ohio.

GUMP --- Josiah Gump
....he was born in Bedford Co., Penn., Nov. 29, 1824. His father, Benjamin GUMP, hearing of Ohio and its fertile lands, resolved to leave his native hills and bring his family to the frontier settlements; he entered an 80 acre tract. His wifes maiden name was Esther SMITH, they had three children. Josiah spent his youth on the farm; he was married to Matilda CLINE in 1849; they had seven children. She died in 1864, he was again married to Miss Eve BUSHEY of Shelby, Dec. 25, 1866; they have two children.

GUNSAULLUS --- Daniel GUNSAULLUS
[Capt.] Daniel GUNSAULLUS, P. O. Mount Hope, was born in Richland
County, Ohio, July 16, 1830; is a son of Daniel and Nancy
GUNSAULLUS; was married to Miss Emma A., daughter of John and
Eleanor MALLORY. Has six children - William W., Wilson B., Mary
E., John, Edmund and Ruby F. Came to Kansas in May, 1871; located
on the northwest quarter Section 10, Township 26, Range 3 west,
in Sedgwick County, Kansas. Occupation, farmer; owns 160 acres of
land, and is engaged in farming and stock raising. He was in the
late war. Enlisted at Defiance, Ohio, August, 1861, in Company F,
Forty-eighth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Was in the battles
of Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Arkansas Post, Mansfield, and
other engagements with his command, and was wounded at Vicksburg,
Miss.; was laid up three months; was taken prisoner at Mansfield,
La., and held for eight months at Camp Ford, Texas. During his
imprisonment suffered great hardships. Is a member of the Masonic
Fraternity.

GUNSAULLAS --- Mrs. Eunice GUNSAULLAS
...., the relict of H. B. GUNSAULLAS, deceased, P. O.
Barnesville. She is a native of New York, and was married to him
May 20, 1847, in Indiana, her maiden name being HARRIS. Mr.
GUNSAULLAS was born November 16, 1825, in Richland County, Ohio,
and died in January, 1873.... came to Kansas in 1859...

GUNSAULLUS --- F. Dorr GUNSAULLUS
....attorney and counselor at law; was born Aug. 22, 1854 in
Plymouth Township; was married October, 1877, to Miss Jennie E.
GETTINGS, and on the evening of their wedding he and his bride
started for the West, and landed at Aurora, Hamilton Co., Neb.,
Dec. 1877. He returned to Plymouth in May, 1878.

GUTHRIE --- Hugh GUTHRIE
...., farmer, Section 34, Township 8, Range 15, P. O. South
Cedar, was born in Richland County, Ohio, in 1835, and lived in
his native State until 1842, when his parents removed to LaGrange
County, Ind., where Mr. Guthrie lived until September 1, 1861,
when he entered the Union army as a member of Company A,
Twenty-ninth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry.... . After his
discharge he returned to his home in Indiana, where re resided
until the spring of 1869, when he removed to Kansas, locating in
Cedar Township, Jackson County

GUTHRIE --- Nathaniel GUTHRIE

October, 1843; in 1862, he entered the army, was a member of Co.
K, 120th O.V.I. and was enlisted on the 15th of October, 1862 and
discharge Oct. 12, 1863; he was married to Miss Almeda PURCHER;
they have raised a family of nine children.
