HARNLY --- Joseph Harnly
....he was born, Aug. 27, 1838, in Franklin Township; he was married to Margaret Jane RALSTON, who was born Sept. 10, 1835, in Lancaster Co., Penn.; they have four children. Mr. J. HARNLY enlisted in the 15th O.V.I., Co. G, under Col. DICKEY. John HARNLY, his father, was born in Lancaster Co., Penn., June 21, 1806; he came to Ohio in May, 1825, located in Franklin Township; he was married, May 10, 1836, to Catherine A. GILBERT, who was born Oct. 27, 1814, in Wayne Co. They had nine children.

HARRIS --- William Logan HARRIS
Born near Mansfield, Ohio, November 4, 1817. Educated at Norwalk
Seminary and entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal
Church in 1837. He served various posts in educational
institutions and was elected bishop of Brooklyn, NY, in 1872. He
died "about 1888" in New York City.

HART --- Thomas HART
.... farmer and stock raiser, Section 17, Township 1, Range 17,
P. O. Reserve, was born February 24, 1826, in Richland County,
Ohio, where, however, he resided but a short time his parents
removing to Morgan County, Mo., where they resided two years and
then removed to Andrew County, in the same State where Mr. HART
resided until August 20, 1856, when he became a resident of
Kansas, locating in Padonia Township, Brown County, where he has
resided since.

HARTMAN --- George Hartman
....he was born in Adams Co., Penn., in August, 1801; he was bound out to learn the weaving trade at 16 years of age; his parents died when he was young. He emigrated to Ohio in 1828, and remained one year in Stark Co.; he then came to Richland Co., and entered an 80 acre tract of land in Sec. 27; he was married to Miss Catharine STALLSMITH, of Adams Co., Penn., March 1, 1827; they had one child.

HARTER --- Michael D. HARTER
He is the head of that great manufacturing concern, "The
Aultman & Taylor Co." He was born in Canton in 1846, the
son of a merchant and banker.

HAVERFIELD --- Allen HAVERFIELD
His parents came to this county from Harrison County in 1814 and
settled on the tract of land now owned by Joseph HAVERFIELD.
Allen was born in 1826 and remained at home until he 1855 when he
was married.

HAVERFIELD --- Joseph HAVERFIELD
His parents came from Harrison County and settled on or entered
the land Mr. HAVERFIELD now owns. He lived at home until he was
34 years old when he married and settled on the homestead on
which he now lives. He enlisted in the Second Ohio Cavalry, Co.
G, and was in the battles of Cumberland Gap and Knoxville.

HAWN --- Daniel HAWN
was born in Perry Co., Penn., Sept. 12, 1824; his father Mathias
HAWN, removed to Cumberland Co., Penn., when Daniel was about 9
years of age; coming to Ohio in 1844. Mr. HAWN has been twice
married, first to Miss Magdalena BLOOM in 1847; they had three
children, two sons and one daughter; his wife dying, he was again
married, to Miss Mary BLOOM, by whom he had five children.

HAWK --- Jacob HAWK
farmer and stock-raiser, was born in Franklin Co., Penn., Sept.
17, 1837; moved to Sharon Township, November 1851; was married to
Miss Sarah WILL on the 31st day of May 1868. His father, William
HAWK was born in Lebanon Co., Penn., Jan. 12, 1812; moved to
Richland Co. in 1851. The subject of this sketch is the father of
six children.

HAYS --- Esther C. Hays, Mrs.
....widow of Almond HAYS; she emigrated from Fairfield Co., Conn., in 1821; she and her husband came by wagon the entire distance; they started on the 18th day of June and arrived the 18th day of July. Mr. HAYES died April 15, 1856, aged 56 years; Mrs. Hayes was born Oct. 30, 1798, in Fairfield Co., Conn., and was married to Almond HAYES Oct. 9, 1820; they had six children. Her son, Lewis C. HEBRON --- Walter S. HEBRON
...., editor, was born in Marshall County, W. Va., in 1849, and
lived in his native State until 1860, and moved to Richland
County, Ohio, with his parents, and in 1863, enlisted in the army
in the Eighty-second Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served until
the close of the war, and returned to Ohio and lived in that
State until 1870 and came to Kansas, and located in Harvey County
and lived there eleven years, and moved to Burlington in 1881,
and started the Burlington Republican, a forty-eight column, home
print paper. Mr. Hebron was married in Harvey County, Kan., in
June, 1881, to Miss Mary Dempsey, a native of Kentucky, and have
one child -- Vena. Mr. Hebron is a member of the Masonic Order
and the Grand Army of the Republic.

HESS --- Isaac HESS
Born in Ankenytown, Knox County, Ohio, just across the Richland
County line, July 2, 1845, a son of Henry HESS and Sarah
FREDERICK. Living in Butler Township in 1901.

HESS --- Reuben Hess
....was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in January, 1841; his father was a minister of the Reformed Church, and came from Bucks Co., Penn., to Columbiana Co., where he remained some time and then removed to Trumbull Co., where he remained several years; he then went to Delaware, Delaware Co., Ohio and preached some ten years; he then removed to Galion, Ohio, and preached one year; he then removed to Larue, Marion Co., where he preached one year, and then came to the charge in Shelby, where he preached two years; he purchased the southeast quarter of Sec. 28, Jackson Township, where he lived some five years; he moved to Madison; he also preached several years in Pennsylvania; he died in August, 1875. The subject of this notice, Reuben HESS, has acquired considerable land, owning 295 acres; he was married to Miss Margaret LEPPO Nov. 20, 1862; they have a family of interesting children. He moved to Springfield Township, where he remained one year, and then removed to where he now resides on the southwest quarter of Sec. 26.

HESSELTINE --- J. HESSELTINE
..., farmer, P. O. Sabetha, was born in 1830, in Clinton County
N. Y.; reared in Medina County, Ohio, where his parents, Eli and
Betsey HESSELTINE, settled in 1833. In the spring or 1858 he came
from Marion County, Ohio, to Kansas, and his present farm, 160
acres of which he holds by virtue or the United States patent.
His first night on this claim was spent by himself and family in
their wagon; he then building a shanty of "sheeting;" a
bed being made by driving two stakes, and placing sticks from
them to the walls. His neighbors were a Z. AARCHER and A.
MOOREHEAD, not a house being in sight. To-day he has 720 acres in
a well fenced and improved farm, and a commodious farm-house
built in 1879. He married Miss Caroline WAITS, of Richland
County, Ohio....

HETLER --- Christopher HETLER
....he was born in this county July 6, 1842, and is a son of
Andrew and Mary HETLER, who came from Pennsylvania and settled in
the south part of Weller Township. He is the fourth of a family
of seven children. He was married, Jan. 17, 1863, to Margaret J.
KELLER, of Franklin Township. After his marriage he settled on
his father-in-law's farm, where he remained two years, when he
emigrated to Southern Illinois, where he remained one year; he
then removed to Franklin Township, where he remained six years,
and then to Weller Township, and in the spring of 1878, bought
and moved on his present farm in Butler Township. Mr. and Mrs.
HETLER have three children.

HETLER --- Samuel HETLER
....born in this county Oct. 19, 1839, and is a son of Philip and
Catherine HETLER, who were of German descent, and who removed
from Pennsylvania in 1832 or 1833, and settled in the south part
of Weller Township. Mr. H. is the eldest of a family of seven
children. He was married in the fall of 1860, to Sarah A. WOLF,
of Franklin Township, daughter of John C. and Hettie WOLF. In
1869, he bought and moved to the west part of Butler Township.
Mr. And Mrs. HETLER have eight children.

HEYSER --- Elias HEYSER
...was born in Washington County, Maryland, February 27, 1827. He
remained there until he was three years old, when his parents
moved to Franklin County, Pennsylvania where he remained until
June 19, 1845, when they moved to this county (Richland). He was
married to Elenor FURGESON in 1848. He moved to Ashland County,
Ohio, in 1849. In 1857 he moved to Iowa where he remained until
about November 2. About this time his wife died. He returned to
this county some time in the same year where he has remained ever
since. Mr. HEYSER was married to Arabell LICKLITER in November,
1858. She was born in Hampshire County, Virginia, February 16,
1834.

HINES --- Lewis Hines
....was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, May 4, 1831. His father, Frederic HINES, emigrated to America in 1840, and remained three years, when he returned and brought his family; he settled in Lancaster Co., Penn.; about the year 1850, he and his son Lewis came to Ohio and remained one summer and returned to Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1861, when he emigrated with his family and settled two miles and a half east of Shelby, where he and his wife still reside. The subject of this notice remained in Pennsylvania until 1866, when he came to Ohio, and located in Jackson Township; he was married, Nov. 20, 1854, to Margaret BLEACHER, of Pennsylvania; they have five children.

HITCHCOCK --- I. W. HITCHCOCK
...., coal dealer, was born in Richland County, Ohio, December
13, 1830. His father, Isaac HITCHCOCK, owned a large woolen mill.
Until he attained his majority, he was engaged in farming and
working in the woolen factory. In 1851, Mr. H. removed to
Lafayette, Ind., where he engaged in carpenter work until 1863,
when he enlisted in Company I, Eleventh Indiana Cavalry. Was in
the Hood-Nashville campaign and was afterward captured in
Tennessee but soon effected his escape. After the war closed he
returned to Lafayette and resided there until 1867 when he moved
to Champaign County, Ill. Came to Butler County, Kan., in 1870.
Farmed until 1879, when he removed to Peabody. Was married in
1856 at Lafayette, Ind., to Miss Hannah FREEMAN. Has three boys
and four girls, the eldest being twenty-six years old. Is Officer
of the Day of G. A. R.

HOCKENSMITH --- Adam HOCKENSMITH
farmer, was born in Frederick Co., Md., Dec. 21, 1801; when he
was 12 years old his parents moved to Mifflin Co., Penn., where
they remained for some years, and emigrated to Stark Co., Ohio.
Adam was married to Miss Sarah MYERS Oct. 9, 1828 in Stark Co.,
and in 1830 they came to Vernon Township, Crawford Co. Mrs.
HOCKENSMITH was born in Adams Co., Penn., April 6, 1806; her
parents finally moved to Richland Co., where they died. As a
result of the marriage, there were born four children.

HOFFMAN --- Daniel Hoffman
....he was born in York Co., Penn., March 26, 1798; about seven years after, his father, Frederic HOFFMAN, moved to Adams Co., Penn., and settled ten miles north of Gettsyburg, where the subject of this notice remained until the fall of 1831, when he emigrated to Ohio and remained over winter two miles south of Mansfield; in the spring of 1832, he came to settle the southeast 80 acres of Sec. 23. He was married to Miss Sarah STALLSMITH, of Adams Co., Penn., Aug. 18, 1822; they had eight children.

HOFFMAN --- J.W. Hoffman
....was born in Adams Co., Penn., Dec. 8, 1829; his parents came to Ohio in 1831; about the age of 22 he commenced farming for his father, he farmed some five years, and then removed to Sharon Township, where he remained two years, and then moved on the farm known as the Rogers farm. He then moved to where he now resides, which is a portion of the northwest quarter of Sec. 26. He is a member of the Reformed Church. He was married to Miss Ellen KUHN, of Plymouth, and as a result of their union they have had a family of eight children.

HOLGATE --- Mrs. Elizabeth HOLGATE
she was born in Tompkins Co., N.Y., Feb. 5, 1821; she moved to
Steuben Co., N.Y., at the age of 16 years, and remained there
seventeen years, then moved to Shelby, Ohio. In 1837, she was
married to William REYNOLDS, who as born in 1813, in Otsego Co.,
N.Y.; had by this marriage six children. Her first husband was
killed on his farm in 1842; she was married to Reuben HOLGATE
Sept. 23, 1876, who was born in Pennsylvania; she was Mr.
HOLGATE'S third wife.

HOLLENBAUGH --- Isaac HOLLENBAUGH
farmer, was born in Richland Co., Ohio, Nov. 6, 1840; his father

to Miss Mary STROUP, of Perry Co., Penn.; they had eleven
children, ten sons and one daughter, the subject of this notice
being the seventh child. He was married to Miss Emily ROUSH, Jan.

HOLTZ --- George Holtz
....he was born in Perry Co., Penn., in April, 1830; his father emigrated to Ohio and settled in Jackson when George was a child. He was married to Miss Margaret OTT, in January, 1849, who was born in Germany in October, 1830 Her father emigrated to Ohio when she was a child, and settled in Jackson; they have had five children. Benjamin Adams LOWE, son-in-law of George HOLTZ, was born in Liverpool, England, Feb. 2, 1852. When he was 17 years of age he emigrated to America. He went west to Miami Co., Kan.; he traveled considerably through Kansas, Texas and Indian Territory; he then returned to England to see his parents and returned to the United States some few months after. He was married to Miss Mary Ann HOLTZ Feb. 19, 1878.

HORNBERGER --- Catharine Hornberger, Mrs.
....widow of Benjamin HORNBERGER; was born in Lebanon Co., Penn., August, 1819; her father, Jacob SNYDER, emigrated from Pennsylvania with his family of six children and settled in Stark Co., near Massillon, about 1829. Mrs. HORNBEGER remained at home until September, 1842, when she was married. Some five years after, her husband came to Richland Co. and purchased 80 acres in the northwest quarter of Sec. 27, where Mrs. HORNBERGER now resides. He died September, 1853, aged about 48 years. He was born n Franklin Co., Penn.; they had five children.

HOUPT --- W.H. HOUPT
importer and wholesale dealer in all kinds of marble and granite;
was born in Seneca Co., Ohio; his parents removed to Crawford
Co., Ohio, where he spent his youth on the farm; at the age of 26
he went to Somerset Co., Penn., and engaged in the marble
business for some two years and a half; he then came to Ohio.

HOWE --- Martin
was born4 March l845 in Richland County, Ohio. Although
hisparents are unknown, they are probably Samuel HOWE and Sophia
MUNDY whowere married in Richland County on 23 May 1843. Samuel
HOWE was born inConnecticut about 1787. Sophia MUNDY was a native
of the state ofMaryland. They are still alive and enumerated in
the Richland Countycensus in 1850. Sophias father is
probably Thaddeus MUNDY, who isliving in Richland County in 1850,
with his second wife, ElizabethSHADLE. Through unknown
circumstances, by the outbreak of the Civil War, Martinand his
older brother, Pulaski, who was born in Richland County in
1843,were living somewhere in theAllen-Hancock-Hardin counties
area, and considered themselves to be orphans. Pulaski lived with
the family ofHammond GILBERT, in Ada, Ohio. Pulaski enlisted with
several of theGILBERT boys in Co K., 33rd Ohio Infantry on 12
September l861. He waswounded at Perryville, Kentucky, and died 3
weeks later of his wounds on30 October l862. One of the Gilbert
boys was also an early Civil Warcasualty, and a G.A.R. post was
named in his honor in Lafayette, Ohio. Martin HOWE enlisted in Co
D., 34th Ohio Volunteers at Lima, Ohio on 16December l863. He was
wounded slightly while engaged near Charleston,West Virginia, but
remained with his unit. Later he was sent to thehospital with
pneumonia at York, Pennsylvania. With most of the rest ofhis
unit, Martin was captured at Beverly, West Virginia, on 11
Januaryl865. At this time, the 34th Ohio ceased to exist
officially. Martin washeld at Libby Prison in Richmond until
paroled on 17 February l865. Hewas granted a furlough, and was in
Columbus, Ohio on the night Lincolnwas shot on his way to join up
with the 36th Ohio. Martin was musteredout of the army at
Wheeling, West Virginia, on 27 July l865. In l870, Martin HOWE
emigrated to Nebraska, homesteading in the YankeeHill area of
Lancaster County, southeast of the Capitol City of Lincoln.On 23
September l874, Martin HOWE was married to Susannah
CUMMINGS,daughter of James and Sarah MILLER CUMMINGS, formerly of
Morrow andBelmont Counties in Ohio. Martin HOWE served as a
bookkeeper in the office of the Commissioner ofPublic Lands and
Buildings for 4 years. He also served one term as CountyClerk of
Lancaster County, and served on the Board of Health for
fouryears. He was active in Nebraska G.A.R. affairs, serving as
their bookkeeper and as an adjutant. At one time, he served as
adjutant of the Soldier's Home at Grand Island, Nebraska. In
l914, he became acting superintendent of the National Cemetery at
Fort Keokuk, Iowa,transferring to Fort McPherson at Maxwell,
Nebraska in l915. In l918,Howe resigned due to ill health, and
entered the Soldier and Sailor'sHome at Milford, Nebraska,
shortly after. He died at Milford on17December 1920 and was
interred with other family members at WyukaCemetery, Lincoln,
Nebraska.

Born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, March 8, 1804. His
parents came to this county in fall of 1822. He was married to
Rachel SNYDER June 10, 1828. She was born in Washington County,
Pennsylvania, Sept. 12, 1811. She came to this county in 1815

Township, came to Saline County in the fall of 1857. ..... Born
in Richland County, Ohio, February 27, 1840. He served as Second
Lieutenant of Company B. State Volunteer Militia of Kansas,
during Price's threatened raid and Indian troubles of 1864-65.
Married in 1863 to Miss Annie GLERSCH, of Washington County, Wis.
They have five children - Peter, Solomon, Mary, Andrew and Leon.

....was born in Dauphin Co., Penn., in March, 1818; when 18 years of age, he commenced the trade of saddlery with his brother in Hummelstown, Penn., and followed that trade for twenty-five years; desirous of obtaining a farm, he sold his property and emigrated, in 1864, with his family, to Ohio, where he purchased a tract of 80 acres in Madison Township; he remained there about eight years, and sold his farm and purchased the southwest quarter of Sec. 12, where he now resides. He was married to Miss Elizabeth HERTZEL in December, 1843; they had eight children.

HUSS --- John A. HUSS
stonemason; he was born in Lancaster, Penn., Aug. 16, 1844; he
came to Richland Co. in 1867; he was married to Sarah E. CRAIGLOW
Nov. 25, 1869; who was born in Jackson Township; they are the
parents of five children. Mr HUSS volunteered in the service of
the United States at the commencement of the civil war, and
remained in the army during the entire struggle.
