ST. JOHNS --- Giles ST. JOHNS

SAMS --- Amos M. SAMS
.... Section 9, P. O. Centralia, was born in 1817, in Richland County, Ohio. Left there at the age of twenty-two, lived nine years in Indiana, twelve years in Michigan, and in 1860 brought his family to Kansas.

SAMSEL --- Jacob SAMSEL
....born in Olivesburg Aug. 6, 1836, and is a son of Peter and Mary SAMSEL, who came from Germany in 1836. He married, June 7, 1858, to Sarah J. OBERLIN, of this township (Butler). In May, 1872, his wife died and left him two children. After several years, he was married to Eliza GLENN, of Weller Township; they have one child.

SANKER --- John G. SANKER
....born in Saxon Germany Sept. 20, 1825, where he resided until the age of 7 years, when his parents removed to this country, and located in Columbiana Co., this State, where they remained for about fourteen years, when he removed to this township (Blooming Grove). In the year 1847, May 30, he was married to Miss Catharine SONANSTINE; they have raised nine children. During the late war, his son, Curtis J., entered the service for his father at the age of 17 years.

SCHEAFFER --- J.E. SCHEAFFER
....was born in Pennsylvania in 1845. April 13, 1861; he enlisted in Co. E, 1st Penn. Battery; there remained until Aug. 21, 1863. In 1864 he started West; In February, 1867, he returned to Pennsylvania; in December of the same year, he went to Crestline, Ohio. He was married, Dec. 22, 1868, to Miss Clara MCKEAN, of Leesville, Ohio, whence he moved to Plymouth, Ohio; they have two children.

SCOTT --- Daniel SCOTT
He was born in Sandusky Township (Richland County), Dec 31, 1837. Married in 1862 to Nancy Jane LINDLEY, who was born in Troy Township (Richland County), Aug. 10, 1836.

SCOTT --- John SCOTT
...was the second child of Thomas SCOTT, one of Ohio's earliest pioneers. He was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, August 23, 1809. In the year 1834 he was married to Miss Jane CANTWELL, of Richland County, and two years later (1836) he with his wife removed to Troy Township (Richland County).... Mr. SCOTT died Jan. 19, 1880, aged 70 years, 4 months, and 26 days.

SCOTT --- Joseph SCOTT
....farmer; he was born in Sandusky Township, May 4, 1843. Married, in 1869, to Mary BROWN, who was born in Wayne CO., Ind.; they have six children. Mr. SCOTT enlisted in the late war, in 1861, in the 1st O. Independent Battery.

SCOTT --- William SCOTT
....farmer; was born on the farm in Union Co., Penn., on Sept. 15, 1815, and removed to Sandusky Township, this county (Richland), in 1835. He was first married to Mary Ann, daughter of the late Daniel RIBLET; she was born in 1817; his second wife, Eliza, daughter of the late John BOOKWALTER and widow of Samuel FREED. He was married to his present wife, Charity, daughter of Jacob SPROW, and widow of the late David L. CHAMBERS, in 1876.

SECHRIST --- George B. SECHRIST
....he was born in Dauphin Co., Penn., June 10, 1827; he is a son of Peter and Mary SECRIST, who came to Richland Co. in the spring of 1839, and bought a tract of land in what is now Butler Township. The subject of this sketch is the second of a family of six children; he lived at home until he was 22 years old, when he married Anna L. TAYLOR, of this county; after his marriage, he moved to Blooming Grove Township, where he lived about one year, when he moved to this present home. Mr. and Mrs. SECRIST have two children.

Henry SECRIST
He was born in Pennsylvania, Feb. 18, 1818. His parents came to Wayne County in 1826, then came to this county in 1828. He was married to Elizabeth SINTZ in 1841.

SEILER --- M.K. SEILER
....harness-maker; was born in Dauphin Co., Penn., Sept. 18, 1842; the family came to Ohio when Mr. S. was quite young. In Sept. 1861, he enlisted in Co. D, 32d O.V.I.; he was captured in September, 1862. After his discharge he returned to Richland Co. On June 6, 1866, he was married to Miss Clara E. HULL; they have three children.

SELLERS --- John E. Sellers

....he was born in Franklin Co., Penn., Dec. 3, 1845, and spent his young days in the village of St. Thomas, attending school until about the age of 16, when he enlisted in Co. H, 2d Penn. V.I. for three months; after he worked the trade of cabinet making,; he quit the trade in August, 1862; again enlisted . in Co. H, 126th Penn. V.I., for nine months; he was discharged with his regiment, May, 1863; returned home then re-enlisted for the third time in January, 1864, in the 20th Penn. V.C. for three years and wounded. He was discharged in June, 1865, then returned to Franklin Co., Penn. a short time and emigrated to this county; working his trade in Shelby, then removed to Jackson Township. He was married to Miss Susannah LASER in November, 1868; they have three children.

SHADE --- Jeremiah Shade

....was born in Cumberland Co., Penn., Dec. 9, 1844; he was married to Miss Rebecca HULL April 12, 1866; they have two children. Mrs. SHADE was born in Jackson Township April 11, 1847, on the farm owned by Andrew SNYDER. Her father, John HULL, came from Adams Co., Penn., in the spring of 1842, and settled in the southwestern part of Jackson; he died in 1865. His wife, whose maiden name was STOCK, survived him until 1875. Jacob SHADE, father of Jeremiah, was born in Perry Co., Penn.; he emigrated to Ohio in 1855. Mrs. SHADE, whose maiden name was Mary Ann MESSENGER, was also born in Perry Co., Penn.; they had eleven children.

SHELDON --- Maria Sheldon, Mrs.

....widow of Alvah Sheldon; she was born in Berkshire Co., Mass., Oct. 6, 1801; her maiden name was COTTON; she emigrated, with her uncle, to Penfield, N.Y. near Rochester, when she was about 23 years of age. She was married to Mr. SHELDON in September, 1825, and remained near Rochester some twelve years; they then moved to the town of Royalton, Niagara Co., where they remained nineteen years; they then emigrated to New Philadelphia, Ohio, where they lived three years; thence to Richland Co. in the fall of 1857. Mr. SHELDON was born in Vermont Aug. 17, 1799; he died in Richland Co. in September, 1858. She is the mother of eleven children.

SHELLER --- H. B. SHELLER
....he was born in this county, Feb. 14, 1837; his parents came to this county in 1824, from Pennsylvania, and settled on a farm in what is now Ashland Co., where his father died when he was quite small; he was the only child, but his mother marrying again, he had three half brothers. The subject of this sketch lived at home until he was 20 years old, when he went to learn the mason trade which he worked at three years; then he followed threashing for seven falls, in the spring of 1863, he went to Williams Co. and bought a farm, where he lived about three months, and then came back to Butler Twp. He was married in the fall, and moved on his father-in-law's place, where he resided two years; then moved back to his farm in Williams Co., where he lived about two years, when he sold his farm and bought where he now resides. He is at present living with his second wife; he has four children.

SHERMAN --- John SHERMAN

Born in Lancaster, Ohio, May 10, 1823. His parents, natives of Norfolk, Conn., moved to Ohio a few months after their marriage. Charles Robert Sherman (the father of John SHERMAN), a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ohio, died very suddenly, leaving his widow with eleven children. John, the eighth child, went to live with his cousin, John SHERMAN, as in the spring of 1831 in Mount Vernon, Ohio, where he was placed at school. ...At 21 he was admitted to the bar, having studied law with his brother, Charles of Mansfield, Ohio, who admitted him to partnership. ...In 1848 he began a long political career which included government service as a representative to Congress, U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Treasury, and a presidential candidate in the elections of 1884 and 1888. ...In August, 1848, John SHERMAN was married to Miss Cecilia STEWART, only child of Judge STEWART, of Mansfield.

SHERRICH --- Thomas Sherrich

....he was born in Wayne Co., Ohio, Jan. 18, 1842; when he was about 4 years old his parents left Wayne Co. and settled in Jackson Township; some three years after his father died, and left his mother to take care of the family and pay some debts against the farm. The subject of this sketch worked upon the farm until the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in Co. H, 64th O.V.I. for the term of three years; he was discharged in Cincinnati in February, 1864, having served three years and four months. He was married to Miss Catherine A. BRINER January, 1867; they had two girls.

SHIPMAN --- Alvin SHIPMAN family
....Alvin SHIPMAN, a descendant of Edward SHIPMAN, was born Mar 22 1734 (VT?) and died Mar 12 1858 at Sauk County, WI. On September 18, 1808 in VT, Alvin married Mary (Molly) HATCH, daughter of Noah HATCH and granddaughter of Isaiah HATCH. Four of their five sons were born in Richland County, Ohio. SHIVELY --- Jacob SHIVELY
....born in Franklin Co., Penn.; he came with his parents to Perry Township in the spring of 1836. He formed a matrimonial union with Adaline LAMB April 25, 1850; they had three children....and (Adaline) died July 26, 1856. He enlisted in 1861 and was wounded in June, 1864. He returned, and on Oct. 24, 1865, united in matrimony with Mary A. CROFT; she was born Nov. 15, 1840 and had two children, and (Mary) died in 1873. He married Cindrilla CRAVEN March 21, 1878; she was born Aug. 17, 1826.

SKILES --- W. W. SKILES and G. M. SKILES
SKILES & SKILES, attorneys at law, Shelby; W.W. and G.M. SKILES were born in Stoughton, Cumberland Co., Penn. W.W. SKILES was born Dec. 12, 1849; G.M. Feb. 25, 1852. Their father, John G. SKILES, was born in Cumberland Co., Penn., and is of Irish descent. He was married to Sarah Jane MARTIN, of the same county; as a result of this union there were born seven children, four daughters and three sons. They emigrated to Ohio in 1854. William M. SKILES was married to Miss E. Dora MATSON, only child of John S.B. MATSON. G.M. SKILES was married to Miss Elizabeth CLARK, eldest daughter of Samuel CLARK, of Jackson Township.

SLAYBAUGH --- William SLAYBAUGH
bricklayer and stonemason; was born in Adams Co., Penn., Sept. 5, 1813; his parents, George and Magdalena SLAYBAUGH, whose maiden name was STARRY, came to Ohio in the spring of 1834 and settled about three miles south of Shelby. The subject of this notice came to Shelby in 1845. He was married to Miss Sarah RANK May 16, 1837; she was born in Cumberland Co. Penn., March 8, 1820; came to Ohio with her parents in 1833. Mrs. and Mrs. SLAYBAUGH had six children.

SMITH --- S. J. SMITH
...., Clerk of the District Court, came to Rice County in 1874, locating on a homestead six miles northwest of Lyons, where he has since farmed. He owns 160 acres of land on Section 4, Victoria Township, 130 acres of which are cultivated. He was elected to his present position in the fall of 1880; re-elected in the fall of 1882. He was born in Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio, September 17, 1835; was raised in his native State; attended the Oberlin College, of Ohio, two years. In 1857, he went to Peoria, Ill., where he followed teaching for nine years. He enlisted, in August 1862, in Company E, Seventy-seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry; was promoted to First Lieutenant of his company, and participated in all the battles of his command. He was mustered out at Mobile, Ala., in July, 1865. Afterward lived in Peoria, Ill., until he came to Kansas. He was married, in 1861, to Miss Lucy A. GARDNER, of the latter city. They have six children - Charles J., Edward, Ella M., Frank J., Ransom T. and Lotta Belle. He is a member of the I. O. O. F.; also Kit Carson Post, No. 20, G. A. R.

SNYDER --- Elmer B. SNYDER
.... manufacturer and dealer in harness, saddles, collars, whips, blankets, etc. The son of J. H. and N. J. SNYDER, was born in 1862, in Richland County, Ohio, but left his native State at an early age, his parents removing to Kansas, and locating in Doniphan County, near Highland, where Mr. SNYDER resided until his twenty-first year, when he removed to Morrill, Brown County, where he established himself in business March 1, 1883. He learned his trade with Mr. Norman CASE, of Highland, a well-known (sic) manufacturer of harness in that city. Mr. SNYDER is a young, energetic and prosperous business man, possesses good credit, and as he is the only dealer in his line in Morrill, commands all the trade in the town of his adoption and for miles around. ...farmer, Section 25, P. O. Ottawa, was born in Richland County, Ohio, in 1838, where he followed agricultural pursuits. He came to Franklin County, Kas., [sic] October 12, 1868, and located on his present farm. He has 400 acres of land, 220 of which are in cultivation. He raises considerable cattle, and is a breeder of pedigreed Poland-China hogs. On his place is a fine orchard of about three acres. Mr. SNYDER was married in Richland County, Ohio, in 1864, to Martha J. BILLOW. They have four living children and five deceased.

....farmer, born in York Co., Penn, Sept. 9, 1811, and came with his father to Ohio in 1832; he remained two and a half years, and then returned to Pennsylvania and, in 1835, was married to Eliza STEFFY; one child was born in 1836, and Mrs. S. soon after died. He married Catharine STEFFY, who was born in Pennsylvania June 17, 1821, in June, 1839. They resided in Pennsylvania till 1849, when they came to Perry (Twp.). By his second wife, ten children were born.

SNYDER --- John Snyder

....he was born in Richland Co., December, 1838; he spent his youth in Ohio until the year 1854, when his parents went to Adair Co., Mo., where they lived and died; he remained in Missouri, working at the carpenter trade; he enlisted in the 5th Mo. V.I., and served some time; he then joined the cavalry, and was mustered into the Confederate service in Memphis, Tenn., in 1862; he was taken prisoner, and paroled; he then struck north where he worked on the N.C.R.R. for some time, then returned to Richland Co., Ohio, where he worked at his trade until December, 1867; he has since been farming. He was married to Miss Lydia A. LASER, of Richland Co., December, 1867; they had four children as the result of this union.

SOTZEN --- Henry SOTZEN
merchant tailor; was born in Canton Basil, Switzerland; he remained with his parents on the farm until the age of 16; he was bound to his trade for two and one-half years; at the expiration of one-half the time, he left his employer, for the purpose of coming to America; he left Canton Basil in April, 1844, in company with his brother, Jacob SOTZEN, Samuel and Crist SUTTER. They sailed for New York, making the voyage in thirty-six days; he came direct to Shelby, remaining three years. He then went to Olney, Ill; he worked at his trade about two years. He married Miss Nancy ROSS in December, 1847, who died in 1848. He and a party of twelve started across the Plains arriving at Sacramento, just 100 days crossing. About eight days, after being on the Plains Henry RAUST (an old resident of Shelby, and one of the party,) sickened and died. One Dr. ECKLEY, a former citizen of Richland Co., going to close to a hot spring, the sod gave way and he was precipitated into the boiling water nearly to his waist, which confined him to his wagon until they reached California. In the spring of 1850, he left the mines embarking at San Francisco, for Panama, C.A., across the Isthmaus, from Chagres for New York, where he came direct to Shelby. He married Miss Julia WHITMORE in 1852. He with twelve others set out for Sacramento; returning to Shelby, Jan. 1, 1863 and remained five years; during this time he married Miss Lou GARNHART; they have three children.

SOWERS --- Moses SOWERS
He was born in York County, Penn., July 22, 1791. His father emigrated to Ohio in 1811 and located in Fairfield County, remaining there until 1815. Moses removed to Huron County and settled near where Monroeville now stands. He married Miss Susan BLOOMER Oct. 18, 1829. She was born in Dorset, Vermont, Nov. 25, 1802. In 1832 Mr. SOWERS and family removed to Lexington, Richland County. He continued a resident of Lexington until his death, 16th of February, 1875.

Married Aug. 23, 1810, lived there until 1818, removed to Richland Co., in 1818, leaving the falls May 1, and arrived at their home in the wilderness of Blooming Grove on May 12, where she has lived until now, March 4, 1880. Her grandfather COLWELL, on her mother's side, came from Ireland; her grandmother COLWELL was American-born, born in Chester Co., Penn.; her maiden name was Elizabeth McCLAIN. Her grandfather, John MITCHELL, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland; his father's name was George; grandfather MITCHELL and grandmother Mary CAMBLE, were both born and married in County Tyrone, Ireland, emigrated to America, and settled near Chambersburg, Penn. Her father and mother, Robert MITCHELL and Anne COLWELL were married in 1783. Her brother, David COLWELL, was a soldier under Washington.

During the late war the doctor entered the service as Assistant Surgeon of the 174th O.V.I. He is the fifth child of Robert and Elizabeth STARR, old settlers of the county. In 1852 he was married to Mary M. CUMMINGS; they have three children. His parents came to this county in 1817.

He was married Jan. 26, 1873, to Phoebe MANN, who was born in Huron Co., April 12, 1839; she lived in Huron Co. thirty-eight years, the balance in this township; they have one child.

...., farmer, Section 18, post office Fort Calhoun, was born November 16, 1818, in Richland County, Ohio; May, 1857, he came to Omaha, and the following August removed to Fort Calhoun; followed the milling and mason trade about twelve years; the past twelve years he has been engaged in farming and stock-raising; was four years Probate judge, and Justice of the Peace the past twenty-two years. He owns 170 acres of land; he is one of the finest hog raisers in the county, and his stock, which is composed of eighty head of cattle and 150 hogs, are of the finest breed. Married in 1871 to Fannie J. SAMPSON, of Franklin County, N. Y. He has one son and two daughters by a former marriage.

STOVER --- John Stover

....he was born in Lancaster Co., Penn., in May, 1823. His father, John STOVER, emigrated to Richland Co. with his family of six children in 1835, and settled about two miles and a half southeast of Shelby, near what is now known as Taylortown, where he purchased the farm his son now owns; he died in January, 1852. The subject of this notice was married to Miss Leah LANDIS in February, 1853; three of their children are now living.

STRATTON --- T. J. STRATTON
...., dealer in general hardware and farm implements, lumber, and building material, came to Logan August 12, 1879. Began trade in the spring of 1881 with a stock of $2,500. Now carries a stock of $5,000 and employs two men in the business. His store is 25 x 60 feet deep; warehouse 25 x 55 feet deep. He was born in Richland County, Ohio, June 25, 1831 and lived there until 1849. Learned several trades in the mean time. Went to Henry County, Ill., and followed agriculture some time. Went to Oregon in 1852, where he followed farming, mining and lumbering, and in California and Washington Territory. Spent about two and one half years in Idaho in mining, and participated in the Indian war there. He thence returned to Oregon and embarked in merchandising and shipping fruit, etc. Afterward went to Puget Sound with stock, and followed droving there about three years. Then returned to Illinois. Enlisted December 1, 1864, in Co. C, One Hundred and Thirty-fourth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served about six months. Then followed merchandising in Illinois and the Southwestern States until he came to Kansas. Was married in 1865 to Miss Mary A. Dack, of Rock Island, Ill. They have one son, Dan. G., now assisting in his father's store.

was born in the Canton of Basil, Switzerland, in May, 1823, where he remained until he was 4 years of age, when, with his mother, his father having died, he went to Orisdorff, in Basil, and remained there until 1841. In April 1844, he started from Basil to come to this country; arriving in Shelby about the 11th day of June, 1844. Mr. SUTTER was married, Dec. 24, 1846, to Miss Elizabeth WILL, who was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1825, and by whom he has had nine children.
