"The 'Church of God' have erected a new house of worship, at a cost of between four and five thousand dollars.  The Messrs. Kieffers were the architects and builder, and I would just here saying justice to D. L. Kieffer, Esq., who designed the building, that the citizens of Smithville are under many obligations to him for giving us the handsomest church building and the tallest steeple in the county.  and I say further to all those contemplating building churches, procure the 'Squire if possible, for he takes them all down in designs and mechanism."  "The Church of God has been holding a protreacted meeting in their new house, since the dedication, three weeks ago."

"Rev. O. H. Betts, formerly pastor of the Church of God in this place, paid a short visit to our village a few days ago, and the cordiality with which he was received can best be imagined from the fact that he had scarcely more than made his appearance when he was accosted by a party and marched off into the country a short distance, where, before again leaving, he had the pleasure of joining in the holy bonds of matrimony, a couple of our young people.  We don't pretend to say whether this was an impromptu marriage or not, but we feel assured that had his presence been among us during the summer, similar circumstances would have occurred.  Come again, Mr. Betts."
