Faulkner School - Autumn 1993

Memories of the Little Red Brick Country School

" The one room school where I attended first grade
From our home about a mile away
No school bus ran to take us there
Walking was the style in that day.

Each grade was called on to the front row seats
To be taught and participate
The remaining students studied at their desks
The grades were one to eight.

There was only one teacher for all eight grades
What a task that must have been
But lessons were learned and the grades we earned
Showed on cards to our parents she'd send.

A small coal shed stood outside the school
Where fuel was kept for winter
To be burned in the big stove sitting inside
The fuel carried in by the janitor.

No modern conveniences as known today
Nor were there any toys
But two small "buildings" stood outside
One for girls and one for boys.

Our drinking water was pumped from a well
Near the school in those days of old
A bucket was filled and carried inside
To drink when the weather was cold.

One time for a Christmas program
I was stood atop a desk
To recite the small part that I was given
Trying timidly to do my best.

When I saw so many faces looking at me
It made me really nervous and scared
But the teacher gently coaxed me on
Though I'd previously been prepared.

The old school house is still standing
In a field on London West Road
No children's laughter heard there now
But the memories do not erode.

As I reminisce about the fun we had
The activities at the time
I think of the teacher who was caring indeed
Her name - - Lois Faulkner Stine"
