Gamble School History

In September of 1823, our government sold the Northwest Quarter of Section 20
in Sharon Twp. to John Gambell from Ontario County, New York. The Gamble
Schoolhouse is located on the very northwest corner of this Northwest Quarter Section
and has been allotted for the purpose of a school since before 1845. John C. Gambell
(Gamble) was the eldest son of James Gambell (Gamble) the Revolutionary War
veteran, who arrived in Richland County from New York State c. 1823.

John C. and his wife Elizabeth Rathburn/Gamble retained this property until 1845
when they sold a portion of it to John's younger brother, Hugh Gamble. Hugh was a
prominent lawyer, Justice of the Peace, member of the Ohio Legislature, and
Associate Judge of Richland County.

The deed description mentions "a small lot now occupied by the District School".
A year later, Hugh Gamble and his wife Mary Disbrough (Disbro) / Gamble sold a
portion of this land containing the school house lot to his son Hugh Gamble Jr.

By 1858 the property was owned by George W. Moore, and in 1873, the land upon
which the schoolhouse stood was formally sold to the Sharon Twp. Board of Education
by the then owners Albert and Mary Elizabeth Moore.

An article in the Shelby News in 1877 labels this district school as the
"Crall's" school. It was most probably a reference to the Robert Crall
family who lived a short distance from thsi school and had many family
members who taught or were associated with this school district.

The portion of the 1873 atlas (above) shows that the land to the west and north
of the schoolhouse was then owned by Robert and Abigail King / Kerr. Maria,
one of the Kerr daughters had married John H. Gamble in 1863. John was
Hugh Gamble Sr.'s oldest son from his marriage to Mary Disbro. By the early 1880's
John and Maria Kerr / Gamble were living in a house just to the west of the current
Gamble schoolhouse. Maria died in 1897, but the home that was the closest to the
schoolhouse remained a Gamble home for several more years.

During the 1890s, John C. Kerr, a son of William and Sarah Campbell / Kerr
taught several times at the Gamble School, so there was a possibility that the
school might have been named Kerr school. However, the property was originally
owned by the Gamble family and remained in the possesion of the Gamble family
for many years and when it was finally sold, the closest house to the schoolhouse
still belonged to a Gamble family. These seem to have been the overriding reasons
for naming Sharon Twp. District #4 "Gamble School".
