School Location and Neighboring Landowners
Location: South of East Smiley Ave - East of Shelby Corp. Limits
A.A. Graham's "History of Richland County" states that the first school house erected
in Jackson Township was located on what is (then) known as the Cutler farm, one and
one half miles east of Shelby. This farm can be seen on the 1873 Map (above). This
would indicate that the Landis School may be one of the oldest school locations in
Jackson Township. It is questionable as to whether the current brick structure is built
on the exact site of the first school house, but it is certainly near that early location.
It can be noted by examining the two (above) maps, that the location for the
school house in 1873 and 1896, was on, or near to land owned by the Landis Family.
The family of John M. Landis arrived in Richland County in about the year 1837.
By 1893, the Landis property surrounding the school house was owned
by W. J. and L. J. Landis.
ca. 1910 - 1915
The Landis Schoolhouse
The Landis school house was used as a class room until about the years 1936/1937,
when classes were discontinued and the Landis students were sent to the Shelby
school system. The school house was sold to the Otis Black family and it was
converted to a dwelling.

Thanks you Sherri Depinet and Mrs. Dorothy Gribben / Bisel for sending this picture which must have been taken
at the same time as the one supplied by Dorothy Keck/Hoover (above). It appears that no one has changed position
so the names apply for this one as well. And look, you can see Dean Arntz in this picture!
