The genealogy microfilm collection is stored in cabinets in the Language, Literature and History Division, near the microfilm readers. The collection consists of the following microfilmed materials.


  1. CENSUS MICROFILM
    The library owns ALL of the census microfilm for the State of Ohio (1820-1920), including the 1900 Soundex Index, the 1910 Miracode Index , and the 1920 Soundex Index for Ohio.
    The library also owns a large number of random rolls of census microfilm from various states that have been donated by patrons over the years. The holdings are listed by years and then by states in the small card catalog across from the microfilm cabinets.
  2. PROBATE COURT RECORDS FOR SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO
    1. Marriage Records, 1865-1922 /28 rolls
      During the renovation of the downtown Akron library,
      the marriage records are being kept at the Summit Co Courthouse.
      Certified copies $2.00 (each)
    2. Summit County, Old Records: Estate, Death and Birth Index, General Information. 1 roll.
    3. Estate Index, 1840-1949: Death Index, 1869-1908: Birth Index, 1869-1908.
    4. Summit County Will Books & Index, V8-15, 1887-1902. 4 rolls.
  3. AKRON, OHIO TELEPHONE BOOKS
    1929, 1936 and then scattered years from 1940 through 1989.
  4. AKRON, OHIO CITY DIRECTORIES
    1903 -1935, except 1905. The library owns the other years in book form.
  5. INDEX TO THE OHIO CIVIL WAR ROSTER
    4 rolls. Names are arranged alphabetically by surname.
  6. OHIO SURNAME INDEX 64 rolls
    Alphabetical arrangement by surnames and then first names of persons appearing in a large number of Ohio county histories.
  7. TAX DUPLICATE FOR OHIO FOR 1812 2 rolls
    Alphabetical by counties 2 rolls Alphabetically arranged by surname
  8. New England Historical and Genealogical Register Volumes 1 - 59: 9 rolls.
    The index for this periodical is in book form and is stored on top of the filing cabinets in the genealogy section.
  9. Scott, Kenneth Joseph Gavit's American Deaths and Marriages: Volumes 1 - 2. 2 rolls.
  10. Croll, Philip Columbus Annals of Oley Valley in Berks County, PA.
  11. Ministers Marriage Returns, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA from 30 Jan. 1875 to 31 Dec 1885.
  12. Listings are in alphabetical surname order, male and female listings combined. Returns are about 50% Pittsburgh, and 50% Allegheny County, other counties, and some other states.
  13. Genealogical Data Relating to Women in the Western Reserve Before 1840. 1 roll.
    The index is not on the microfilm. There is a printed index in the genealogy section, in the general Ohio section filed under OHIO-WESTERN RESERVE-WOMEN.
  14. New Jersey 1793 Militia Enrollment 1 roll. Listings are by county.
  15. Two Thousand Descendants of Philip Coon (Koon) of West Virginia: A Genealogical Study of the Family in America. 1 roll. Indexed at the beginning of the roll.
  16. Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans. 2 rolls.
    1. Roll #23 Sept. 4, 1843 - Dec. 31, 1844
    2. Roll #26 Dec. 4, 1846 - June 14, 1847
  17. Abstracts of Marriage and Death Notices from the National Intelligencer (Washington, D.C.) 1800-1850. 3 rolls.

    3. Roll 3 1847-1850
  18. Hawkins, Loetitia Matildaf Ancestors, biographical sketches and memories.
      1 roll. Biographical sketches are of English people in the late 1600s, early 1700s.
