Cheney Cemetery

Cheney Cemetery is located west of the village of Essex at 13243 State Route 739 and about ½ mile south on a narrow lane which ends at the cemetery on the right.  This cemetery dates to approximately 1828.  Only about 5 stones remain standing, the rest are laid on the ground under a huge cedar tree.  This cemetery is on land that was once owned by Ebenezer Cheney.  It is a cemetery that came into existence because of necessity.  According to the 1883 Beers' History of Union County, there were just three families in Jackson township in 1828, and each family suffered losses that year.
