SURNAMES: DOWD, WESTCOAT
I am looking for info for a Philander DOWD and Philander WESTCOAT. I thought a Philander DOWD was the grandfather of my mother but the name I found on a tombstone in MacArthur shows that he died in 1859. The grandmother was not born until 1869 so this would be impossible. I did find another Philander DOWD that served in the Civil War out of LaSalle, IL in the 12th Inf. Co. B that may be the one. But I am beginning to wonder if the info I found may be wrong and the grandfather may have been a Philander Westcoat as the date would have been more correct and that he may have had a son named Philander. Any help on either family may shed some light on the actual ancestor.

Married 4/15/1849 to Sarah Ellen Rider, daughter of Edward and Eliza Rider of Swan Twp., Vinton Co. 1850 census lists Henry and Sarah with daughter Martha, and George, who I believe was a brother to Henry, in Swan Twp. Sarah(Rider)Gill's family is also listed in Swan Twp. By the 1860 census records, both families are listed in Paint Twp., Madison Co. and I have not found record of George. I believe he was in the civil war and I have found cemetery records of a George W. Gill, d.1891 aged 58 in the Ebenezer cemetery, wife Catherine, and infant daughter. This age would be the correct age because he was listed as 18yr in 1850 census. Looking for parents of Henry and George and any other information available. Also interested if anyone knows any information about Edward Rider family. They are listed in 1860 census in the household of son, Adam. Have not found record of them after 1860.
