Ertel-Patterson Cemetery
north side of Mounts Road & east of Morrow-Cozaddale Road
Hamilton Township, Warren County, Ohio

Most if not all of the burials in this family cemetery (located in the northeast corner of a 101 acre farm in Military Survey #1497) are for Daniel and Catharine (Myer) Ertel and their descendants including 4 of their 10 children: Valentine Ertel (1793-1820), Daniel Ertel (1797-1870), John Ertel (1799-1851) & Elizabeth (Ertel) Patterson (1806-1881).
Daniel and Catharine (Myer) Ertel
were among the earliest settlers in Hamilton Twp. A number of Biographical Sketches in Beers History of Warren County provide additional information about the family.

The farm is shown on the following maps however the 1875 map is the only one which indicates the location of the cemetery in the northeast corner of the property with an orchard shown to the south and west. Except for the 1932 plat book, the farm is shown to be owned by J. Ertel/Ertle, J. Ertel Heirs, and then John Ertel.

Location:
  • This small farm cemetery is located on the Hildebrant Family Farm (private property) at 2098 Mounts Road. The cemetery is just east of the farm buildings in a little grove of trees surrounded by cultivated fields. The Patterson pillar monument, located centrally on the west side of the cemetery, is the main visible structure. In addition to headstones with engraved names and dates, there were a number of smaller limestone rocks that were sticking vertically out of the ground but were too weathered to have any words visible. It is assumed that they were headstones made out of the local, native limestone, but not polished smooth like commercially made headstones (normally, native limestone rocks are not found sticking up vertically from natural freeze and thaw ground movement). The cemetery is laid out roughly north south, with the Patterson family in the west central portion, the Patton family in the north east, and the Ertel family in the southeast corner.
  • Cemetery #12234 in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003" by the Ohio Genealogical Society
  • Garmin Coordinates: N 39 deg 19.460', W 84 deg 10.497' (at the large Patterson Monument)
  • Military Survey #1497 [recorded as Survey #1548 for Property Account #2622661]

    • Phillip Hart of Morrow, Ohio, visited the cemetery December 13, 2005 & January 7, 2006 to photograph all extant tombstones for the Warren County Genealogical Society and the Warren County OHGenWeb Project. Phil has found the tombstones for Daniel and his wife, Lydia Ertel which were not included in previous readings of this cemetery.
    • Larry W. Collins visited the cemetery on 26 Apr 2006 and again (with Chuck Griffen and Arne Trelvik) on 19 May 2006. By probing the ground, they were unable to unearth a number of additional tombstones - that of the original Ertel family settlers, Daniel and Catherine Ertel along with 9 other tombstones that had not been recorded in previous readings of the cemetery.
    • The cemetery will be included in Warren County Cemetery Records Volume 5 when it is updated with 21 known burials.
Variant Names:
  • Patterson Cemetery, Hildebrant Farm Cemetery
