Sidney D. Vanderveer
son of Benj. & Jane Vanderveer
died Oct. 19, 1864
at Lawrence
Prison, S. C. a
Prisoner of War
aged 22 years 8 months 23 days
[G. A. R. Civil War Flagholder]

Stone is difficult to read but the above is believed to be what is inscribed on the monument.  Previous readings had
- "d. 19 Oct 1864 in Andersonvile Prison of starvation during Civil War" from New Jersey Presbyterian Church, 1813-1988, Carlisle, Ohio: 175 Years
- "d. 19 Oct 1863 at Lawrence Prison, S. Car. Prisoner of War Age 22-8-23" from the "Dunn" reading
NOTE: It is believed that Lawrence Prison should have been Florence Prison.
Sidney Vandeveer is included in a list titled "Ohio Soldiers moved from Andersonville Prison, Andersonville, GA to Florence Stockade, Florence SC"  that is in an article titled "OHIO SOLDIERS BURIED IN "THE TRENCHES" AT FLORENCE NATIONAL CEMETERY, FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA INCLUDING THOSE OHIO SOLDIERS MOVED FROM ANDERSONVILLE PRISON TO FLORENCE STOCKADE" by Kevin Frye, Jack Lundquist & Susan Dunlap Lee, published in Volume VIII, 2004, #4 of the Ohio Civil War Genealogy Journal.  The entry for Sidney Venderveer on page 183 indicates that he was a private in Company B, 2nd Ohio Infantry, that he was at Andersonville and that he died on 19 Oct 1864.  There is no "Code Number" for Sidney, indicating the authors had no additional information and that he was not listed in the book, "The Union Dead of the Florence Stockade" by Rev. Albert H. Ledoux.
