OBITUARY
DIED – At his residence in this neighborhood, on Friday evening
last James Blackburn aged 73 years. The deceased was
one of the few revolutionary soldiers, who have survived the half century
which has elapsed since the war of Independence. Mr. Blackburn was born
in Frederick county (Va.); at an early age he attached himself to the
expedition commanded by Dunmore in 1774, under the King of England against
the Indians. – Soon after the beginning of the revolutionary
war, he joined in 1776 that part of the American Army commonly known
by the name of “The Flying Camp” commanded by Gen. Bell. He
Afterwards was with Gen. Clarke in this expedition against the Indians
in 1780 and was one of the early settlers of Kentucky and Ohio.
He lived and died respected and esteemed by those who knew him –
On Saturday last his remains were attended to the tomb by a large assembly
of citizens where he was buried with the honors of Masonry.
