Obediah Craig Maxwell (1837-1872)

Dayton, Ohio, December 5. – Gen. O. C. Maxwell committed suicide in his room at the Phillips House, about six o’clock this evening, while his wife and other guests were at supper. On proceeding to his room he was found sitting in a chair with his head thrown back, the revolver with which the deed had been committed lying in his lap. He was dead when found, the ball having entered the right temple, and doubtless produced instant death. He leaves a wife and two children – a boy and girl, aged ten and twelve years. Financial embarrassment is supposed to have been the cause.

General Maxwell was a gallant officer in the late war, in which he received five wounds, and at its close was appointed Internal Revenue Assessor of the Third District by President Johnson. He formerly resided in Lebanon, and for the past year has filled the position of Captain General of the Knight Templars of Ohio.
