"LEBANON, OHIO (AP) - PFC. David McConnaughey, 22, who started making
a name for himself as a harness race driver before joining the Army, has
been killed in Vietnam.
Mason McConnaughey, who races trotters and pacers, said he was notified
Thursday his son died when he was hit in the back by small arms fire.
The notification did not give the date and place of the battle.
David was a graduate of Hillsboro High School and first drove a pacer
at the age of 15..
Since 1960, he drove his father's horses on various Ohio tracks and finished
in the money 12 times in 21 starts. He entered the Army in May, 1965,
and was sent to Vietnam in October.
The McConnaugheys have four sons. The family lives at Hillsboro during
the winter, but moves to a trailer near the Warren County Fair Grounds
