David Roll

David Roll, born February 14, 1841 in Butlerville, Warren County, Ohio. He enlisted in Company E, 17th O. Regiment of Infantry, August 31, 1861 and mustered out September 27, 1864. He was united in marriage to Laura Long, October 1864, who died February 26, 1900. To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters of whom William Z., Dellis D. and Izetta are living together with 14 grand children and two great grand children. He died February 4, 1916, age 74 years 11 months, 20 days. He was a good soldier, always ready for duty. He took part in the engagements at Corinth, Perryville, Stone River, Resacca, Peachtree Creek, Chickamauga and Siege of Atlanta.

The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church in Butlerville conducted by Rev. J. R. Hunter, a comrade with him in the same regiment. The large number present at the funeral indicated the universal respect in which he was held. A male quartet rendered appropriate music. Truly the veterans are passing rapidly away. Close up boys and let us touch soldiers as in the old days. Ware are only a picket line left. It may be our work is not yet done. These are troublous times and no man knows what is ahead. It is true that the strength of youth is gone but we still have the same dauntless souls with which we march to battle in the sixties. As long as we live we can show our patriotism and our faith in God and our country.
