Lebanon Academy

The Lebanon Academy was incorporated 19 Feb 1844 by 117 stockholders led by William Charters, Amos Barr, William Russell, Joseph Anderson and Robert Boake. A building was erected that same year on land acquired from Ebed & Polly Stowell and is still standing. The academy opened September 1, 1844 with C. C. Giles the first principal..

On 24 November 24 1855, the building and equipment was transferred to the newly formed Southwestern Normal School which later became National Normal University

The historical marker placed by the Lebanon Rotary Club - Chartered 1920 is inscribed, "LEBANON ACADEMY "The Lebanon Academy school was opened in 1844. Built in the Greek Revival style, it has a pediment roof, and three column-like brick piers. In 1854, an attempt to make it a school of science failed. The first session of the Southwestern Normal School began here in 1855. A college for training teachers, it was founded by Alfred Holbrook. "The college was soon known as the National Normal University. The academy was part of it until 1895. In 1900, it was sold at public auction for $2,125. In 1913, it was rented to the Lebanon Village Schools. They bought it in 1920, and held elementary classes here for nearly 50 years. The academy was purchased by the city in 1975."

    "The Commercial Gazette announced on December 10th the death of Dr. Ithamar H. Drake, at Shelbyville, Indiana, of heart disdease, in the sixty-second year of his age. Dr. Drake was the son of the late Peter Drake, of Turtlecreek Township, and was one of the first pupils of the Lebanon academy"

    "He attended the district school in the winter; attended the Lebanon Academy in the winter of 1849—50, and one year at the Ohio Wesleyan University. Couden; he attended lectures at the Starling Medical College, at Columbus, Ohio"
