Collision; Chicks Win, 18-4

Police Sgt. Frank Pawlak and Bernie Hodkey today shared the spotlight in the City Class A baseball league by virtue of their outstanding performances when Yale Clothes crushed Kirbys, 9-0, to take undisputed possession of the circuit lead.

Pawlak, 31-year-old first baseman, exploded a heavy bat with a home run and triple which sparked the victors, while young Hodkey limited the highly-touted foe to four bingles and whiffed 12 batters.

Playing at Longfellow field before the largest throng of the season, Yales rolled into a 3-0 lead at the end of two innings and it was easy sailing from that point.

In other "A" league tilts, Chicks blasted the Elks, 18-4, while Elyria eked out a 10-9 win over the Lorain National Tube.

Hodkey was in trouble on only one occasion - in the fourth inning - after one man was retired, he walked two and struck a batter to fill the bases. He then whiffed the next man and the third out was recorded with an infield pop-up.

Gerber Injured

Dale Meredith started on the mound for Kirbys and lasted four innings as he was touched for six runs and nine hits. Art Thomas stepped in for the relief role and was nicked for five bingles.

The game was marred by an accident in the first inning when Freddie Gerber, Yale centerfielder, suffered a possible fractured left knee cap in a collision at the plate.

In addition to Pawlak’s two smashes, the offensive power was centered around Bill Lute with a double and a pair of singles, Hodkay, Pat Cavanaugh and Bob Sanborn each collected two hits apiece for Yales.

Gerber Opens Attack

Yales opened the first inning with Gerber’s single, Lute followed with a bunt and reached first base. Cavanaugh singled but Gerber was tagged out at the plate, Leo Pawlak walked and Bob Sanborn singled to drive home the first two runs. The victors added another run in the next frame after Frank Pawlak tripled and tallied on Hodkey’s single.

Yales tolled the bell four times in the fifth, after Lute doubled, Cavanaugh singled, Leo Pawlak singled, scoring both Lute and Cavanaugh, Sanborn singled, and Bob Meyers crashed a triple to score two runners. The final two runs came as the result of Pawlak’s eighth inning homer.

Holding first place with six wins and no defeats, Yales are scheduled to practice at 5:45 p. m. Wednesday and Friday at City field.

When Chicks rolled over the Elks, Bill Walters connected for a home run, while Steve Janik and Bob Pekare clouted triples. Walter Kaczay and George Vancs each clubbed three hits apiece.

Watson’s homer in the ninth inning with Kaminski on base was the deciding factor when Elyria edged the National Tube.

Krontz’s Homerun in 6TH

Gives Harts 3 to 1

Softball Triumph

Bill Dulick, Lorain softball twirler, who has turned in many a good mound performance in past years, added another one to his record yesterday as he pitched his Hart Jewelers to 3 to 1 no-hit triumph over the Sandusky I. A. B. club at Sandusky yesterday.

The Sandusky club scored its lone run in the first inning of the tussle when Geno Balconi walked, went to second on a fielders’ choice, took third on a fly ball and scored on a passed ball. And that was their lone effort.

Krontz Gets Homer

However it wasn’t until the sixth inning that the Harts could get back into the game despite Dulick’s perfect pitching.

But that sixth inning did it for that was when Clanky Krontz cut loose with a terrific smash into center field for a homerun which scored Dulick ahead of him.

The Harts finished up the inning with three runs to gain their margin of victory, slamming out a total of eight hits during the game with Krontz, Dulick and Mitroff each getting a pair of bingles.

Dulick had 12 strikeouts.
