THE EDICK FAMILY

From Steven Benton, benton@isgs.uiuc.edu , July 28, 2000

The EDICK family were relatively short-term residents of Pioneer, OH.  In 1869, JOSEPH EDICK purchased land in and around Pioneer from PHILETUS NORRIS.  The land purchased included the NW 1/4 of Section 21, T9S, R2W in Madison Township containing about 61 acres and Pioneer town lots 92, 93, 94, and 95.  From other deeds it appears that Joseph's entire family intended to settle in Pioneer.  However, his death in 1870 apparently ended those plans. JOSEPH EDICK was born 14 Aug 1812 in Herkimer Co., NY.  His wife, POLLY YOUNGS, was born 26 Jun 1815 in either Herkimer or Oneida Co., NY.  They had four children, WILLIAM PHILO EDICK, JAMES HENRY EDICK, EMILY SOPHIA EDICK, and MARY ELIZABETH EDICK.  In 1842, the family moved to Jefferson Co., NY from Oneida Co., NY where they were to live for the next 26 years.  In about 1868, Joseph and Polly moved to Washtenaw Co., MI, and in 1869, Joseph purchased the property in Williams Co., OH. The 1870 census of Williams Co. lists Joseph Edick and his grandson JAMES EDICK, the son of William Philo.  Joseph died on 1 Sep 1870 and was buried in Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer.  Three deeds dated 3 Oct 1870 reveal that Joseph purchased the land in Pioneer on behalf of himself and his entire family.  In these deeds, William Edick, Emily Edick Carver, and Mary Edick Hill each received the sum of $500 from their brother James Henry Edick for their interest in the Pioneer property.  In 1873, James sold the property to GEORGE DURBIN for the sum of $2800. Several members of the Edick family stayed on in Pioneer for several more years.  In October 1870, William purchased 32 rods of land in the NE corner of the Mill Block in Pioneer from SIMEON and MARY DURBIN.  His name appears as "W.P. Edick" on the 1874 map of Pioneer.  In 1873, Polly Edick purchased parts of two town lots from ABIDON and ALBA THOMAS, and in 1876, sold a town lot to her grandson James. James Edick lived in or near Pioneer for about 10 years.  He was living there with his grandfather by 1870 (census record).  He was married in 1873 to MARY PAINTER in Amboy Twp, MI.  In 1877, he ran a photography studio in Pioneer with John Bennett.  They are listed in the 1877 Williams County Directory under, "Edick and Bennett, Main st, up stairs."  Though there are no records of their births, at least three of his children, MELISSA BELL EDICK, MAGGIE MAY EDICK, and JOHN BENJAMIN EDICK, were probably born in or near Pioneer. By 1880, James and his family had moved to Muskegon Co., MI.  Joseph Edick's daughters, Emily and Mary, never actually moved to Pioneer.  They stayed in New York State.  William Edick lived in Pioneer for a time, but ultimately moved to Detroit, MI.  James Henry Edick also lived in Pioneer for a time. One of his children, ALLA BERTHA EDICK, was born in Williams Co. in 1871 (birth record on file with the county).  Polly Edick died in 1876.  However, her resting place is not known. My line of descent from Joseph Edick: Steven Benton, Marilyn Edick, LaVern Edick, John Edick, James Edick, William Edick, Joseph Edick.
