Guthrie's parents and siblings also lived in Williams Co. They were William Guthrie and Rachel Jones; James' father died there, as did brother Thomas and brother David. Naomi Strever to Joseph C. Sprague, 29 Aug 1850, Springfield Tp, Williams Co., OH. She was formerly Naomi Cook, married 03 July 1832 Greenfield Tp., Saratoga Co., NY to Robert Anson Strever who died in the Mexican War. I had an email recently from Lolita Guthrie of the Guthrie Family Assn. saying research (archaeological) was being done in Williams Co. reference James T. Guthrie's original claim and settlement. Interesting! My neighgbor, a mile down the hill, is a Wartenbe descendant... from a brother to Isaac Wartenbe that married Eliza Guthrie, nee Dawson, widow of Thomas Guthrie... small world!

J. William (Bill or Billy) Linker, jwlink2@aol.com, April 17, 2001 - CRAWFORD, FERGUSON
My Mother (Wilma Winona Crawford) was born in Williams County on May 15, 1903. Her twin brother was Wilbur Walter Crawford. She always understood that no record of her birth was available because the courthouse in Bryan had burned down destroying all records. Her older sister (Harriet Rhoda Crawford) was born in September 1900 on her mother's birthday. Her younger sister Verde Crawford was born in 1905. I understand their parents (William Walter Crawford and Lucina Ferguson) were related to the earliest settlers in William County. The families lived in and around Montpelier. Reunions were always held at Nettle Lake. William Walter left school at an early age to work on his father's traveling sawmill. He had a brother, George Washington Crawford. This was not George's birth name. He changed it. Lucina had a brother Jim and sisters named Mary and Nettie. Mary's married name may have been Ranier(sp). Lucina had a relative (male? or female?) that became a doctor and married a doctor. They left Ohio and went to Missouri to become country doctors in the Ozarks. William Walter and Lucina bought an 80 acre farm in Reading, MI in about 1905. They spent the rest of their days there with the exception of winters spent with Harriet in Fort Wayne, IN. My Grandmother, Lucina died at the farm. My Grandfather, W.W. Crawford died in Fort Wayne. I would have to research dates of these deaths. It sounds like early Williams County data has been lost again. If any Crawford or Ferguson relative becomes known I would like to correspond.

Karen Rinnert Parsons, DiggerParsons@aol.com, April 29, 2001 - BRACE, SPRAGUE, KING, STUBBS, STRONG, PRETTYMAN, BRILL
I'm looking for the Luther BRACE and Elizabeth (Betsey) SPRAGUE BRACE marriage.... Have found that there was a Lewis King in (near Ballston Spa and South Greenfield)) North Milton, Saratoga County, NY. He born about 1795 (so of the same generation as Betsey). He died Jan 26, 1858 age 63 years, and buried in same place as wife Cynthia. He married Cynthia --b. 1796, died 1868, and buried same place as Lewis King. They had two children who died young: Sally King, b. 1827, and d. 1838, Calvin King, b 1830 d 1831, age 1 year, 2 mos. They also evidently had another daughter....Frances. Frances m. in Feb 1860 John J. Brill b WIlton, NY 15 May 1827 ...The reference says Frances, daughter of Lewis King, who was one of the earliest settlers of the town of Greenfield, in Saratoga County, NY"....married John J. Brill in 1860...It doesn't mention any other Lewis King at these times, in this county....at least that I have been able to find. Wilton, by the way isn't too far from Milton, in Saratoga Co, NY.....I don't have any of my files right in front of me, but this area is the same place where the Strong and Sprague families were. I believe somehow the Brace's were involved here for a short time.
Census:
1790- Strong, Sprague and King families were in Saratoga Co, near Ballston Spa and Saratoga at this time.
- need to check these next 3 time frames for who was where and when...1800 1810 1820
1830 - Luther Brace was here, with Solomon Sprague in Deleware Co, Porter Twp, Ohio. So was Lindenberger family. Solomon's sister, Phoebe Sprague Barber was here, as was Solomon's brother Festus Sprague, before he left to go to Utah with the Mormons.
Children living with Luther and Betsey Sprague King Brace
---Mary Ann Brace b. ca 1824....Married John Stubbs.
---Ezeke Issac (or known as E C, or Issac ) born 10 October 1828, North of Albany
--Ebenezer - born ca 1831 (this is what I believe to be my line...)
--James b ca 1832 OH and died 1867
1834 Solomon goes with grandson Lewis King Jr to Williams Co, Ohio.
5 Dec 1835 Luther and Betsey married before Solomon's death, as they were named in Solomon's will as married.
NOTE: Lewis King, Jr. married Jane Prettyman in Williams Co., OH (buried in Boynton Cemetery, Springfield Twp.)

Janet T. Newman, janet.t.newman@worldnet.att.net, May 1, 2001 - STOUGH, REDDING Eleanor (Mickey) Stough, widow of George W. Stough (1826-1863) is reported to have married her brother in law, William Stough II, widower of Sarah Ann Redding (1819 - 1864). Both couples were marrried in Richland Co. OH. The William Stough II family moved to Williams Co. OH. In 1869 he was Mayor of Bryan. Evidently also involved in various commercial ventures. The George W. Stough family moved to Whitley Co. IN and both parents are buried there. George W. Stough's death in the Civil War reported in Williams Co. newspaper. However Eleanor Stough and children were missing in the 1870 Whitley Co. IN census. The family returned to Whitley Co. and the children married Whitley residents around 1880. No record of the marriage of widow Eleanor (Mickey) Stough to widower of William Stough II has been located. Moreover neither Eleanor's biography nor her obituary mention the second marriage. Does anyone have any any information about this reported second marriage? If there is anyone with the 1870 census, could they check to see if Eleanor Stough is living with William Stough, residing in Bryan Williams Co. Have a great deal of information to share on this branch of the Stough family from Cumberland Co. PA

Caral MECHLING BENNETT, cmechlingb@aol.com, May 20, 2001 - PICKING, SNYDER, BATES/BETZ, PEACH, LYONS
David PICKING, born 4 Jul 1849, Richland Co OH, s/o Christian & Maria (SNYDER) PICKING, came to Williams Co OH circa 1869-70, bringing his pride and joy - a threshing machine. Supposedly, one farm had a field so large, that it took him 1/2 day to get around. The family story is, that when he got to the BATES farm, he saw Huldah standing at the door, and decided right then, that she would be his future bride. She was the d/o Moses & Anna (PEACH) BATES (BETZ in PA), who had come from Summit Co OH. In Aug.1870, David appears on the Productions of Agriculture in Millcreek, Wms Co, Post Office Primrose OH, with 80 acres. This may have been the farm of his aunt, Susan (PICKING) LYONs. There is probably no further record of this family then, as sometime after 1870, David and Huldah moved to LaGrange Co IN, residing there and at Sturgis, St. Joseph Co., MI. Huldah died in Lima twp., LaGrange Co IN on 29 Feb 1892, age 38 yrs, due to childbirth complication, and is buried at Oaklawn Cem, Sturgis MI. David died 20 Sep 1910 at Howe, LaGrange Co IN, age 61 yrs, and is buried with Huldah at Sturgis MI.

MCQUEEN327@aol.com, May 26, 2001 - McQUEEN, SNYDER, YEAGLEY, BOLEY, HOLMES, KNIPE Looking to confirm the name of the parents for William H. MCQUEEN. William is shown as a 6-year-old with his 4-year-old sister Adaline (Angeline) living with John J. and Elizabeth SNYDER in the 1860 Census of Clinton Township, Fulton County, Ohio. Adaline married Enos YEAGLEY. John and Elizabeth had two daughters in the 1850 Census who disappeared from the 1860 census. Only Hannah was old enough to be William's mother. William also married Roxie KNIPE May 5, 1878 in Williams County, Ohio. William's uncle James McQueen married Sarah Ann HOLMES. James is found in the 1850 Census of Clinton Township, Fulton County, Ohio living with Horace and Alvira BOLEY. Alvira's maidenname was HOLMES, and she was the sister of Sarah Ann HOLMES who married James MCQUEEN. James had two brothers who may have been my William H. MCQUEEN's father Henry and Oliver. I suspect Henry was William's father but have no proof. The MCQUEEN, HOLMES and BOLEY families are all from Onondaga County, New York. They came from New York across the "Lake Trail," to Fulton County, Ohio between 1837 and 1850. Answers may be in Fulton County or Williams County probate records.

Nora Planson and her husband, James Emile Roux, were buried in Stryker, Ohio in 1957. They had been living in Fort Wayne, Indiana where other Roux members of the family had settled. Both the Roux family and Planson families were originally from France. As of the date of Nora's death, she had a brother, George, and sister, Ida, still living in Stryker, Ohio. Ida died in Stryker in 1966. George died in 1962 in Columus, Ohio, but was listed as a resident of Williams County. He was married to Clara M. Harden in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1901, but returned to Ohio with her. James Emile Roux was born in Ohio along with a brother, Henry. Karen Murphy, LMAKLM@aol.com, June 25, 2001 - KENT Much mystery surrounds the death of Benjamin Kent, was is said to have been the grandfather to Dr. Thomas Kent, of Bryan, OH. The original burial grounds for the fledgling village of Bryan (1841), were located on a small hill located at the northeast corner of the intersection of present day Center Street and Portland Street. In 1911, Undertaker A.C. Dillman wrote in the local paper that several graves were never removed from this old cemetery to the new cemetery now known as Fountain Grove Cem., at Bryan. The graves from the "old Bryan cemetery" were removed to Fountain Grove in 1858. Left at the "old cemetery" were a Mrs. Kaufman, Benjamin Kent and one other, whose name is now lost to posterity. Benjamin Kent is said to have died in 1846 at the age of 103. There was a Benjamin Kent Sr., who was listed in the 1846 Tax Records as owning Lot 149 in Bryan. It is thought Mr. Kent came to Williams County about 1840. In 1906 a pig was offered to anyone who would re-inter Mr. Kent, but no one took up the offer. Now comes the mystery surrounding Benjamin Kent's supposed Revolutionary War Service. Even though "eye witnesses" recall the burial and name of Benjamin Kent, a researcher states the name was Thomas Kent. According to a 1947 newspaper article written by H.C. Pemberton of Cleveland, OH., Thomas Kent was 96 years old in 1840, and was enumerated in Columbiana Co., OH. that same year. His son, Benjamin, arrived in Columbiana Co., in 1824 in advance of Thomas. Benjamin later moved to Williams Co., OH., and Thomas again followed his son Benjamin and settled in Williams Co., OH, about 1841. On page 115, Vol. 3, a Government roster of those receiving pensions for service in the war of 1776-1873, is the name of Thomas Kent in Columbiana Co., OH., whose pension was granted for service as a private in the Virginia State Troops. He was placed on the roll Oct. 25, 1833, but the pension was paid from March 4, 1831. Thomas continued to receive his pension from the Pittsburg Agency to Sept. 4, 1846, which was the last he recieved. This payment was sent to his attorney B.L. Fahnestock. As pensions were apparently paid semi-annually, on March 4 and Sept. 4, Thomas Kent's death death is fixed some time between Sept. 4, 1846 and March 4, 1847. On page 442, Brumbaugh's Virginians, Thomas' service is noted as being in the 5th Virginia Continental Line, and on page 350 he is shown as receiving a Navy Land Warrant, No. 4332 for land in the Virginia Military District of Ohio, for service in the Navy.See: Thomas Kent Generation Report
