CARL ALBERT 1908-2000
Carl Albert, born May 10, 1908, Bugtussle, Ok, died last night, Feb 4, 2000, in McAlester, Ok. He was 91 years old. He served in the US House of Representatives for 30 years, five years as Speaker if the House, and twice was the Vice-president of the United States, standing next in line to the presidency.

Carl Albert spent 30 years representing Oklahoma's 3rd District, and he became Democratic majority leader in 1962 and speaker in 1971. He retired in 1976. Carl Albert, 5-foot-4 1/2, was known as the ``Little Giant from Little Dixie,'' a reference to the Democratic stronghold in southeastern Oklahoma that he served.

He was a Democratic leader in Congress at a time when one president was felled by an assassin, John Kennedy in 1963; another chose to forgo a reelection campaign because of an unpopular war, Lyndon Johnson in 1968; and a third resigned the presidency under threat of impeachment, Richard Nixon in 1974.

Carl Albert served in World War II, rising from private to colonel, and on his return was elected to the U.S. House. Albert is survived by his wife Mary, a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister and four grandchildren.

Carl Albert was a major contributor to Millie Priessle's Albert Family Newsletter, and published a book on his family line titled My Albert Family in 1976. It is a hard to find book, but is available through the National Archives and can be found online at http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/1855/index.html where it is showing up as "Author Unknown".

Besides being a politician and a nationally recognized leader, he was a friend to all Oklahomans and next to Will Rodgers is probably one of Oklahoma's best known. From the Carl Albert Center, at OSU to the Carl Albert Hospital in the Chickasaw Nation, and to Carl Albert State College. It is unlikely that he will be forgotten anytime soon in Oklahoma's history

His Albert line: Hans Albert -->Sebastian Albert and Maria Fierer -->Laux Albert and Anna Maria Schoffer -->Hans Wilhelm Albert -->Hans Michael Albert and Mary Margaretha -->John Simon Albert and Mary Gregor -->Jacob Albert and Patsy Young -->Eli Albert and Sophia Chaffin -->Granville Albert and Mary Jane Logdson -->Ernest Homer Albert and Leona Ann Scott -->Carl Bert Albert and Mary G Harmon
