Log Cabin Democrat
Conway, Faulkner County, Arkansas
Fri., 06 July 1928

JOE HOLMES ELECTED TO OKMULGEE SCHOOLS

Joseph R. Holmes, Hendrix College graduate and son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Holmes, who reside near Conway, has been elected superintendent of the city public schools of Okmulgee, Okla., and has removed to that city from Sapulpa, Okla., where he has been city superintendent for the past four years.

The Okmulgee Times Democrat in its Sunday edition devoted one of its first page columns to a review of Mr. Holmes' career in Oklahoma education and his photograph was also reproduced.

Since graduating at Hendrix, Mr. Holmes has at various times been public school principal at Atoka, high school principal at Sapulpa, and superintendent of the schools of that city. He also served in the Tenth field artillery during the world war and participated in four major engagements on French soil. He is also a past president of the Sapulpa Rotary Club and has for some time been a member of the Oklahoma state board of education.

Several Hendrix men have had noteworthy careers in Oklahoma education. Along with the new superintendent at Okmulgee are J.R. Barton, superintendent at Oklahoma City, and Walter W. Parker, president of the Teacher's College at Alva. Another Hendrix alumnus, Dr. Forney Hutchinson, is pastor of St. Luke's Church at Oklahoma City and is also a factor in the state's educational advance as member of the state board of education.
