He mustered out of service 27 February 1864. John's first marriage was to Mary Ann Bracelin. After her death, he was remarried to Tressa Magdeline Ridgeway. In 1893 he joined the land run in Oklahoma, when the Cherokee Strip was opened, homesteaded near Isabella, Oklahoma.
