Cite Your Sources Here: Husband's Notes : Died of Small Pox. Corporal in Confederate Army of Ga., under Capt. Hanleiter's Co. L. Artillery (aka Jo Thompson Artillery) Referred to as Jees L. McAlister of J.S. McCallister or Jesse S. McAllister from enlisted for 3 years as a recruit. His company muster rolls show him present for Jan 1863 to 28 Apr 1864. Promoted to Corporal 14 Mar 1864 and declared AWOL on 23 Apr 1864. Listed as deserted on 6 May 1864 and captured at Dalton, Ga. on 15 May 1864. From Dalton he was taken to military prison at Louisville, Ky. and then sent to Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana on 21 May 1864. At Camp Morton he wished to take the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. and go home to Nashville, Tenn., a Loyal Man. He died at the post Hospital there of Smallpox on 2 May 1864 (2 May is listed on government records, original card reads 21 May 1864). When Camp Morton was deactivated, the bodies (1616 Confederate Soldiers and 22 confederate civilians) were moved to Greenlawn Cemetery to Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. The names of the soldiers are to be found in Garfield Park in down town Indianapolis, Indiana. Wife's Notes : Applied for and received Widow's Pension for State of Ga. from 1891 to 1907 (from copies of her application and warrants - Icy McAlister, Union County). She received $100 per year? She unable to write, applications marked with an X Checks sent to Gaddistown from 1891 to 1895, then to Blairsville from 1895 to 1907. Presumably moved to be with her children and grandchildren in Okla.
